Job description

Employees in this class assist in the operation and care of a variety of water treatment plant operations during an assigned shift, and perform related work as required. This is specialized work in the operation of a water treatment plant.

The following duties are normal for this position.

  • Responsible for proper operation of water plant equipment so the product meets quality standards and requirements of the State health agency and of the Village’s Utility Department.
  • Taking samples for laboratory analysis
  • Taking and recording meter readings at regular intervals and adding sodium hypochlorite and other chemicals to raw water.
  • Operates pumps and other work-related equipment.
  • Required to know and work in accordance with established plant operating procedures. Specific instructions are given for any departure from such standard procedure or for special jobs.
  • Work is appraised through inspections and review of laboratory and operating reports by the Lead Operator and/or Water & Sewer Superintendent.

EXAMPLES OF WORK(Illustrative Only)

  • Work effectively without close supervision and to make minor decisions pertaining to work problems.
  • Locate, define and repair minor faults in equipment.
  • Spot potential trouble spots and report them promptly to the Lead Operator.
  • Make simple and complex tests on water samples, make recordings from gauges and meters, and change charts as required or acquire such skills within a reasonable length of time on the job.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

High school diploma or G.E.D. is required. Certification or graduation from a trade school is preferred. Supplemental courses in chemistry or related subjects, mechanical aptitude or any other equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be acceptable. Employee must be able to read, write and speak English and must also possess good math and analytical skills.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Employee must secure a class “C” Water Control Operator License from the State of Florida within 12 months of the date of employment. This is a condition for continued employment.
