Job description

Job Title: Water Plant Operator

Under the general supervision of the Water Plant Superintendent, operates and controls an entire process or system of machines, often through the use of control boards, to transfer or treat the community drinking water supply. Responsible for observing and adjusting gauges, filters, pumps, valves, and chemical feeders to ensure an adequate water supply.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. High school diploma or GED; post-secondary education including courses in chemistry, math, biology, and electricity preferred.
  2. At least one year of experience in operation and maintenance of mechanical equipment, including electrical and instrumentation work.
  3. Valid Michigan motor vehicle operator license.
  4. State of Michigan Drinking Water Certification F-4 license or ability to obtain within 18 months of employment.
Work Environment

Varies from indoor laboratory work to outdoor grounds maintenance, involving exposure to chemicals, fumes, vapors, and electrical hazards. Indoor work is typically quiet to moderately noisy; outdoor work may involve heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling up to 100 pounds.

Oral Exam - 100%
Candidates must undergo a psychological evaluation, a post-offer medical examination, and drug screening before employment. A probationary period must be satisfactorily completed for permanent appointment.
