Job summary

City of Redding seeks a Water Treatment Operator to support the water treatment and distribution system. You will check and repair chemical injection equipment, monitor turbidity, operate and maintain filter treatment, collect samples, and run lab tests as needed.

The position requires knowledge of water treatment processes, safety procedures, SCADA software, and the operation of wells, pumps, meters, and related equipment.

Qualifications

• Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Typical education would include a High school diploma or equivalent, with strong background in biology, chemistry, and algebra.
• College classes necessary to obtain California T-3 Water Treatment and California Grade D-2 Water Distribution certificates.

Job description

Check, adjust and repair chemical injection equipment; check turbidities in the plant and system; operate, assess, and maintain filter treatment operation effectiveness; check chlorination equipment; collect samples for analysis of water and run lab tests as needed; check pumps or booster stations, check wells for operation, productions, and water quality; maintain records and reports and operate computers; perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the job classification.

Knowledge of:

• All types of operation and maintenance work on water supply, treatment, and distribution facilities
• Knowledge of the chemical processes involved in water treatment and relevant safety procedures
• Wells and pump stations
• Servicing, setting, and installation procedures for meters
• Knowledge of State and Federal water quality standards
• Knowledge of safety policies, procedures and practices
• Knowledge of computer operations and SCADA software

Ability to:

• Interact effectively with the public and employees
• Operate all necessary vehicles and equipment to meet the responsibilities of the job
• Communicate effectively in oral and written form
• Drive a utility truck
• Use a hydro lift, forklift, power tools, hand tools, water analysis equipment, and air compressor

Education:

• Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying

• College classes necessary to obtain California T-3 Water Treatment and California Grade D-2 Water Distribution certificates

Experience:

• Typical experience would include one year experience in water treatment or water distribution and/or completion of a course of study in water treatment and/or water distribution.

Special Requirements:

• California Water Treatment Operator Grade T-1 or T-2 Certificate and a California Water Distribution Operator Grade D-1 or D-2 Certificate. The OIT must obtain T-3 certification within the probationary period
• Possession of the appropriate California driver's license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment

Examination Process:

An online written examination will be administered. This recruitment will establish an eligibility list that may be used to fill current and future vacancies. This recruitment will be open until filled and may close with little or no notice.

Selection Process:

Final appointment is contingent upon:

• Positive past employment references.
• Review of driver history record.
• Passing a city paid fingerprint criminal conviction check (applicants 18 and older).
• Passing a pre-employment medical exam and drug and alcohol screening test.

Veterans Credit:

Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating "Honorable Discharge" from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score.
