Job summary

City of Redding is seeking a wastewater treatment operator to monitor and maintain plant operations in accordance with state regulations. The role requires performing chemistry and equipment checks, plus reporting irregularities to supervision.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Measure sludge depth and inspect clarifiers for quality.
• Check aeration basins for scum, foam, and pump issues.
• Calibrate dissolved oxygen probes and monitor return solids.
• Monitor aerators and check for leaks, noise, and vibration.
• Inspect pumps, conveyors, and headworks equipment.

Job description

• Measure sludge depth and perform visual observation and inspection of primary and secondary clarifiers
• Check aeration basins for scum and foam
• Check aerators for oil leaks, excess noise and vibrations in aeration basins
• Perform overall plant inspection and observations; note aerator amp meters, which aerators are running, and check aerator timer for proper step, time, and function
• Calibrate dissolved oxygen probe and check return suspended solids meter
• Check return sludge, waste, and scum pumps for seal, water, and excess noise and flow output check headworks conveyor belt

Knowledge of:

• Operation and maintenance procedures of plant controls and equipment
• Biological processes operation
• All applicable state regulations and requirements for plant operation and discharge

Ability to:

• Interact effectively with the public and employees
• Operate all plant equipment with skill, efficiency, safety, and accuracy
• Effectively communicate in both oral and written manner
• Work safely in hazardous atmospheres using a self-contained breathing apparatus

Education & Experience:

• Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge skills, and abilities is qualifying
• Typical education would include a high school graduate, or equivalent
• Advanced course work in wastewater treatment
• Experience would include one year in wastewater treatment plant operation or completion of a course of study in wastewater treatment

Special Requirements:

• The OIT must obtain Grade III certification within the probationary period. While not required, a California Water Resources Control Board Grade I or Grade II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate of Competence is desired
• Possession of the appropriate California driver's license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment
• If interested, ability to qualify for hazardous materials emergency response operations, including physical fitness testing and physical exam, which includes but is not limited to, pulmonary function/fit test

Selection Process:

Final appointment is contingent upon:

• Positive past employment references
• Passing a city paid fingerprint criminal conviction check (applicants 18 and older)
• Passing of a pre-employment medical exam and drug and alcohol screening test

Veteran's Credit:

Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating “Honorable Discharge” from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score.
