Job summary

City of Huron's Water Treatment Plant seeks a Water Plant Operator to perform routine inspections, operate pumps and monitor water quality. This non-exempt role involves rotating 12-hour shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed, with a starting hourly rate of $25.78 and a pay range of $25.78–$29.91.

You will support testing, data tracking, maintenance, and reporting to ensure a reliable, potable water supply for the community.

Qualifications

  • High School graduate or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum one (1) year related experience.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Ohio Driver's License.
  • Ohio EPA laboratory certification within six months of date of hire.
  • Class I Water Supply certification from the Ohio EPA within two years.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine inspections and preventative maintenance on (assigned) equipment.
  • Maintains clean working areas and cleans equipment.
  • Operates, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs pumps, valves, motors and related equipment.
  • Performs basic to intermediate math related to chemical dosing.
  • Assists in monitoring water treatment, tests and lab work.
  • May be assigned to shift rotation, weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Assists in reporting, tracking and complying data related to the water system.

WATER PLANT OPERATOR Department: Water Filtration Division: Service Location: Water Treatment Plant, 10 Waterworks Dr., Huron, OH
Classification: Non-Exempt Pay Range: $25.78 - $29.91
Starting Hourly Rate: $25.78
Union: AFSCME

GENERAL PURPOSE: Performsa variety of general service duties in repair, maintenance, operations and tracking of the public water system in a way that provides thegeneral publicand community with a reliable and affordable product that is both potable and palatable.

SCHEDULE: May be assigned to operational 2-week rotation consisting ofestablished12-hour day or night shifts. May be assigned to relief operator/maintenance duties Monday-Friday 6:00AM– 2:00PM, when not covering shifts in the operational rotation. Ability to work weekends and holidays as assigned. Work schedule is at the discretion of management based on operational needs, skillsand abilities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Worksunder the general supervision of the Water Superintendent and Chief Operator.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs routine inspections and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or repairs to supervisors. Maintains clean working areas and cleans equipment.

  • Mustpossessmechanical aptitude necessary tooperate, maintain,troubleshootand perform repairs on pumps, valves,motorsand other mechanical equipment associated with water utility operations.
  • Ability to perform basic to intermediate math related to chemical dosing.
  • Assistsin the proper operation of the water plant, including monitoring water treatment, performing tests and lab work.
  • May be assigned to a shift in the 24/7 operational rotation or shifts may vary, including weekends and holidays.
  • Performs quality control activities, such as testing ofwater supply; provides necessary services for the water system to be self-sustaining.
  • May be assigned to the weekly on-call rotation.
  • Assistsin the reporting, tracking,and complying of data related to the water system.
  • Makesrecommendations for needed supplies and equipment, pick-up equipment,and supplies, andadviseexternal vendors as needed or when problems arise.
  • Other duties asrequiredor assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School graduate or GED equivalent, vocational or technical education in facilities maintenance, mechanics, or related field
  • Minimum one (1) year related experience
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid Ohio Driver's License
  • Ohio EPA laboratory certification within six (6) months of date of hire
  • ClassI Water Supply certification from the Ohio EPA within two (2) years

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED: Knowledgeof operation and use of the following tools and equipment, including but not limited to: City owned vehicles, hand tools,power tools,laboratory and water testing equipment, maintenance equipment, pump and motors, personalcomputerand telephone.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee isfrequentlyrequired to sit and talk or hear. The employee isfrequentlyrequired to walk, stoop, climb multiple sets of stairs each hour, use arms and/or hands to reach, and use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, controls, or tools. The employee mustfrequentlylift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee mayberequiredto work in undesirable weather conditions including, but not limited to extreme heat, extreme cold, rain, snow, and high winds. The employeeis occasionally required towork below ground. The noise level in the work environment is varied and may include undesirable noises such as grinding, grating, or extreme loudness. The employeefrequentlyworks near moving mechanical parts, in high and precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, above and below ground, and vibration. The-employee in this position may experience varied degrees of occasional stress.
