Job summary

City of Wilson is seeking a Water Treatment Plant Operator to perform mechanical and maintenance duties in support of two water treatment plants and related facilities, ensuring safe drinking water for residents and visitors.

The role requires knowledge of electrical systems, pumps, chemistry feeds, and the ability to work in noisy, outdoor environments. A valid NC driver’s license and state license in water/wastewater are preferred within six months of hire.

Qualifications

• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated and a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement within six months of hire.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain an appropriate state-certified license for water or wastewater treatment or distribution as appropriate.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoots and diagnoses problems; performs corrective maintenance on any electrical or mechanical equipment.
• Performs regular preventative maintenance on all equipment at water plants and associated sites.
• Unloads bulk chemicals used in water treatment.
• Performs the work of Water Treatment Plant Operator when necessary.
• Installs and demonstrates equipment to upgrade the facility.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
