Job summary

The City of Valparaiso, located in Northwest Indiana, is seeking a Water Operator/Maintainer to support the Water Department's treatment and distribution systems.

You will perform maintenance on pumping and treatment equipment, collect daily water samples, operate controls, calibrate analyzers, analyze samples in the lab, and maintain documentation. This is a 40-hour-per-week role with on-call duties and a robust benefits package.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Extensive maintenance experience in the electrical field is highly desirable.
  • Must pass preemployment drug test and essential function screening.
  • Possession of a valid driver\'s license and demonstrated safe driving record.
  • IT DEM WT3 water treatment certification; if not held, pass test within 1 year and obtain within 2 years of hire.
  • Ability to serve on-call on a rotation basis.

Responsibilities

  • Repair or replace electrical equipment, including telecom systems, voltage systems, inverters, and networks.
  • Maintain, repair, and remodel plants, pump houses, wells and vaults (painting, plumbing, electrical, carpentry).
  • Operate or control treatment processes to ensure safe drinking water; monitor equipment, meters, gauges for disinfection and treatment; adjust controls.
  • Calibrate online process control equipment (chlorine, turbidity analyzers, chemical feeds).
  • Collect and analyze microbiological samples per State and USEPA rules; enter data in database.
  • Maintain plant facilities and equipment in clean, sanitary condition; repair pumping and treatment equipment.
  • Respond to citizen calls about Water Quality; manage records and inventory; place orders as needed.
  • Perform required on-call duties.

Job description

The City of Valparaiso, located in Northwest Indiana just southeast of Chicago and minutes from the scenic Indiana Dunes National Park, is seeking a Water Operator/Maintainer for the Water Department (WD). The Water Operator/Maintainer is responsible for performing maintenance and repairs on water pumping and treatment equipment, collecting daily water samples at both water plants and throughout the city, and analyzing those samples in our certified microbiology laboratory. Reports to Water Superintendent.

Qualifications Include:
  • A High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Extensive maintenance experience and strong aptitude, especially in electrical field, are highly desirable.
  • Must pass preemployment drug test and essential function screening.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and demonstrated safe driving record.
  • IT DEM WT3 water treatment certification. If a candidate does not hold a current IDEM WT3 certificate, they are required to pass the certification test within one (1) year of hire and obtain the certificate within two (2) years of hire.
  • Ability to serve oncall on a rotation basis.
Position Expectations Include:
  • Repairs or replaces electrical equipment, including telecom systems, voltage systems, inverters, and communication networks.
  • Maintains, repairs, and remodels plants, commercial buildings, pump houses, underground wells and valve vaults, including painting, plumbing, electrical and carpentry work activities.
  • Operates or controls treatment processes to ensure safety of the drinking water, including, but not limited to, inspecting equipment or monitoring operating conditions, meters, and gauges to determine disinfection and treatment requirements and detect malfunctions; operating and adjusting controls on equipment to purify and clarify water. Utilizes computers at the plants and at home to monitor and direct control of the treatment plants.
  • Performs maintenance and calibration of online process control equipment: chlorine analyzers, turbidity analyzers, chemical feed systems, following maintenance schedule from manufacturer or established plant schedule.
  • Performs Department of Health certified sample collection and analysis of microbiological testing required by State and USEPA rules.
  • Performs collection and chemical analysis for process control and enter data from analytical results required by Department of Health and the Department of Environmental Management in the computer database.
  • Maintains plant facilities and equipment in clean and sanitary operational condition for a water treatment facility. Repairs or replaces pumping and treatment equipment as needed.
  • Responds to citizen calls concerning Water Quality and enters data in the work management system.
  • Maintains pumping equipment maintenance records according to manufacturer's recommendation; maintains inventory records of treatment chemicals, laboratory chemicals, treatment critical equipment parts inventory; places timely orders for routine treatment and laboratory chemicals and supplies as well as consumable maintenance equipment parts as necessary and as approved by supervisor(s).
  • Performs required oncall duties.

Compensation:

Valparaiso City Services provides a competitive salary structure. Annual salary ranges between $24.05/per hour and $28.76/per hour depending on qualifications.

The position is non-exempt (overtime eligible) commensurate with FLSA requirements and is scheduled for 40 hours per week. Please note any overtime requires prior authorization from the appropriate party(ies).
