Job description

The purpose of this classification is to operate equipment and perform work associated with installation, repair, and maintenance of water/wastewater utilities. Under direct supervision, this position performs the full range of Water Service and Wastewater duties.

This is the entry level grade in the Water Equipment Operator series, however, depending on prior experience/training and certifications, the department reserves the right to hire candidates and promote accordingly.

The Forsyth County Water & Sewer Department has approved the following promotional track ladder effective March 1, 2023:

• Water Equipment Operator I - Non-exempt starting at $44,371.00/yr. (base) + $1,000 or $3,000 for CDL license supplement = $44,371.00 - $47,371.00
• Water Equipment Operator II - Non-exempt starting at $46,010.00/yr. (base) + $1,000 or $3,000 for CDL license supplement = $46,010.00 - $49,010.00
• Water Equipment Operator III - Non-exempt starting at $47,650.00/yr. (base) + $1,000 or $3,000 for CDL license supplement = $47,650.00 - $50,650.00

Minimum requirements include a high school diploma or GED. Experience involving plumbing or water utility maintenance is desirable. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license and may require a valid Department of Transportation Flagging certification. Certifications such as Georgia Water Distribution System Operator or Wastewater Collection System Operator are required at higher levels.

• Operate heavy/medium equipment and large vehicles, including maneuvering in confined spaces.
• Install, maintain, and repair water/wastewater utility lines and mains; locate utilities; excavate; connect services; repair leaks; flush lines; install meters, hydrants, valves, and related equipment.
• Operate, inspect, repair, and maintain pumping stations, tanks, and related infrastructure.
• Perform landscaping and site restoration tasks post-project.
• Maintain records of utility locations and test meters and services.
• Troubleshoot and repair water service issues, including disconnects and reconnections.
• Provide customer service and information regarding meters, leaks, and procedures.
• Maintain inventory of tools and supplies; operate various tools and equipment.
• Perform routine maintenance on equipment; ensure safety procedures are followed; set up traffic control measures.
• Complete reports, logs, and other documentation; communicate effectively with team members and the public.
