Job summary

Arlington County is seeking Design Engineer I, II, or III to provide professional engineering and project management for public works projects, including water main replacements and storage tank maintenance. The role supports the Water, Sewer, and Streets Bureau with multi-grade responsibilities across design, modeling, and coordination with regulators.

Ideal candidates will hold a Bachelor's in Civil Engineering, have Autodesk Civil 3D experience, and possess 3–5 years of related field

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
• 3 years of post-Bachelor’s professional engineering experience in street design, storm drainage, sanitary sewer design, water distribution or related area; OR
• 5 years of post-Bachelor’s professional engineering experience in street design, storm drainage, sanitary sewer design, water distribution or related area; OR
• 3 years of post-Bachelor’s professional engineering work experience plus 2 certifications.

Responsibilities

• Develop designs and construction plans including cost estimates, specs, and drawings for public works projects.
• Support water meter team with investigations, testing, data review, and issue resolution.
• Analyze water quality data and address unusual water quality issues with field crews.
• Conduct field investigations and resolve maintenance issues.
• Coordinate with crews, contractors, and utilities to implement improvements.
• Use County databases to locate records and assist issue resolution.
• Coordinate with regulatory agencies to obtain permits.
• Maintain the County’s water system hydraulic model.
• Oversee external consultants providing design and modeling services.
