Job summary

The City of Brenham, TX, is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to assist with maintenance and construction of city water system components. This role requires operation of various equipment, performing routine maintenance, and responding to after-hours customer issues. Candidates must possess valid licenses and be physically capable of handling demanding tasks.

Qualifications

  • One year of experience operating heavy equipment required.
  • Must have a valid Class B Texas CDL.
  • Ability to obtain Class D Water Distribution License within 180 days.

Job description

Summary

Operates various equipment and assists with various duties involved in and the maintenance and construction of city water system components. When needed, assist with new construction or repairs to the Wastewater Collection System.

Starting Pay Rate is $18.30 per hour. Higher pay rate may be available for candidates with current CDL license, previous relevant experience or water licensing.

Residency Requirement :

Employees who are likely to be called to work in cases of emergency may be required to reside within reasonable response commuting ranges of their places of work. A reasonable response time to an emergency is thirty (30) minutes.

Residency which allows response time to a City emergency of thirty (30) minutes MUST be established with 90 days of hire.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Operates various equipment, including jet machine, power saw, underground utility locator, water pumps, backhoe, and cranes;
  • Maintains equipment in proper working condition, including checking oil, water, fuel, tires, and hydraulic system, and making appropriate adjustments;
  • Preforms routine maintenance of water system components, water valve maintenance, replacing water meters and meter boxes, preform gallons per minute testing;
  • Flow test, trouble shoots, replaces, and maintains all fire hydrants in the distribution system;
  • Sets up street barricades and detour routes as necessary;
  • Has the necessary skills to excavate around gas, sewer, electric, and telephone lines;
  • Completes work orders;
  • Cleans and maintains vehicles, equipment, yard, and shop;
  • Serves on call duty with wastewater department to respond to after-hours customer water or sewer problems;
Supervisory Responsibilities

This is a non-supervisory position.

Education and/or Experience

High school graduation or its equivalent plus one year of experience operating heavy equipment; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Knowledge Of

Safe and effective equipment operation practices and procedures; and standard office practices and procedures.

Skill/Ability To

Skillfully operate heavy and light equipment used in water construction and maintenance; service and make minor repairs on equipment; apply safety standards to prevent hazards; understand and follow instructions; and read and understand manuals, ArcGIS mapping, policies, and other documents. Tolerate outside working conditions, including exposure to adverse weather conditions.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Valid Class B Texas commercial driver's license (CDL). Employees who do not have a Class B CDL (Commercial) Texas driver's license must successfully obtain this license within 180 days of hire.

Class D Water Distribution License, or ability to obtain license within 180 days of hire. All licenses acquired through TCEQ that are above the minimum requirement for the position will receive a determined percent raise upon receiving new license.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to engage in moderate to strenuous physical activity, work with tools and equipment, drive vehicles or equipment, perform repetitive motions, perform work involving the entire body, stand, and walk and balance on all types of surfaces. The employee is required to bend from the waist, squat, kneel, sit, crawl, climb, twist, and reach with arms and hands. The employee is required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 100 pounds, such as materials and equipment, and must carry, push, and pull materials. The employee must be able to see clearly, with or without vision correction, in close situations, at a distance, and peripherally, and be able to adjust focus.

The work environment requires that the employee exercise caution at all times and adhere to safety standards to avoid the risk of personal injury. The employee is exposed to outdoor elements, loud noises, vibrations, and respiratory hazards such as dust, gases, and chemicals. The work environment is noisy and distracting.
