The City of Aurora's Water Conservation program seeks a dedicated professional to educate customers on conservation methods and enforce watering restrictions under the Water Management Plan. You will engage with residents, HOAs, and contractors, using AMI data to identify leaks and high usage, and maintain clear records of interactions.

Based in Aurora Water, the role supports ongoing water efficiency efforts, performs field inspections as needed, and assists with documenting program results

Qualifications

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Salary to be commensurate with experience.


The hiring range for this position is $24.35 - $30.43 per hour.

This is classified as VHNE (Variable Hour Non-Benefit Employee), where the selected candidate will work less than 29 hours per week. This position does not provide medical benefits. This position earns sick leave in accordance with the Healthy Families and Workplace Act.


Overview Of Department / Position

Aurora Water is responsible for enhancing and protecting the quality of life for Aurora citizens by providing quality water, sewer, and stormwater services in a manner that balances social, environmental, and economic needs.


The Water Conservation Program Specialist promotes Aurora Water conservation initiatives and educates customers in water conservation methods through customer interactions created by enforcing watering restrictions set by the Aurora Water Management Plan.


Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications & Working Conditions

  • Two (2) years of experience in customer service, public contact, field services, utilities, or a related area involving interaction with the public


Preferred Experience


  • Experience in conflict resolution and navigating difficult conversations

  • General knowledge of irrigation systems, irrigation repair, and practices associated with water conservation

  • Bilingual preferred but not required


Knowledge


  • Basic knowledge of customer service practices

  • Basic knowledge of water conservation principles

  • General understanding of irrigation systems or outdoor water use

  • Basic knowledge of recordkeeping practices


Skills


  • Skill in communicating technical information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences

  • Skill in conflict resolution and de-escalation during enforcement or compliance discussions

  • Skill in documenting interactions and maintaining accurate records

  • Skill in using basic computer programs and mobile devices

Licenses And/or Certificates


  • Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license and be able to operate a city vehicle, or otherwise demonstrate ability to meet the transportation requirements of the position


WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential Personnel


  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.


Physical Demands


  • Moderate physical work that involves moving no more than 50 pounds at a time with or without assistance

  • Frequently performs activities requiring a full range of body movement including bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and climbing

  • Hand/eye and hand/foot coordination for operation of equipment and vehicles

  • Vision for reading gauges and written instructions

  • Hearing/listening for instructions and warning signals

  • Speech communication to communicate with employees and citizens


Work Environment


  • Works primarily outdoors with exposure to all weather conditions, noise, dust, and fumes

  • Long periods of driving time (up to 8 hours per day) throughout the city

  • A small amount of work time will be indoors performing administrative tasks


Equipment Used


  • Desktop, tablet, radio, cell phone; equipment and vehicles common to utilities maintenance functions

  • Uses standard office equipment including personal computer and common office software such as email, internet, Word, and Excel

  • This position may require the use of personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, etc.) in the course of employment


The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
