WASTEWATER TREATMENT SYSTEM MECHANIC
(Stationary Mechanic – Journey Level)
The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County are a non-civil service public agency separate from Los Angeles County government with over 1,700 employees. The Santa Clarita Valley Sanitation District operates the Saugus and Valencia Water Reclamation Plants which serve over 140,000 residents of the City of Santa Clarita and the surrounding unincorporated County areas of Stevenson Ranch and Castaic. Sanitation Districts Nos. 14 and 20 serve a population of over 300,000 from the Antelope Valley and operate the Lancaster andPalmdale Water Reclamation Plants, respectively.

The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County is recruiting for a Journey Level Wastewater Treatment System Mechanic. Current vacancy is at Palmdale. The essential functions of this position are to perform skilled preventive repair and maintenance of stationary equipment and machinery in a wastewater treatment facility. A 9/80 schedule is offered consisting of Monday through Thursday (6:30am-4:00pm) and working Friday (6:30am-3:00pm). After hour, overtime, and weekend callbacks will sometimes be required. Candidates must possess a valid California Class C driver license; -AND-Four years performing directly-related skilled maintenance or craft duties involving the repair and overhaul of a variety of comparable machinery and equipment. Twelve semester units of college related coursework or completion of one year of a two-year trade school in a mechanical technology or closely related program may be substituted for one year of the required experience; -OR- graduation from a two-year trade school in a mechanical technology or closely related program may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
NOTE:
The selected candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Class A or B California driver license within six (6) months. A crane certification from the State of California is also required. Crane certification involves attendance at training sessions, passing written and/or practical examinations and providing annual evidence of medical fitness. This training will be provided by the Districts and is mandatory for the individual who is selected for this position. In addition, the selected candidate must also enter the Respiratory Protection Program and attain the HAZWOPER Technician level training.
The competitive selection process may cover:
Knowledge of:Methods, materials and tools used in the repair of large and complex mechanical equipment such as engines, compressors and pumps and their operation; use of precision test equipment and tools; hand tools, welding and cutting equipment, pipe cutters and threaders, valve grinders and various saws; occupational hazards and safety regulations of the trade.
Ability to:Diagnose and repair a wide variety of mechanical equipment; read, interpret, and work from repair manuals and specifications; use specialized tools and equipment; and instruct apprentices in trade techniques.

SELECTION PROCESS:

  • All applications will be reviewed to determine if the conditions and qualifications for testing are met.
  • The selection process will consist of a written test weighted at 50% and/or an interview weighted at 50%.
  • Candidates must receive a qualifying score on each selection component to move forward in the selection process.
