The Department

The Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is a 15.7 MDG facility serving approximately 164,545 customers, with an annual budget of over $12.8 million and a staff of 34 professionals and technicians. The city is expanding this plant with new facilities including treatment processes and upgrades. A key team member is the WWTP Operator III.

The Position

Reporting to the Chief Plant Operator and Shift Supervisor, the WWTP Operator III provides guidance, mentorship, and supervision during shifts, especially in the absence of the Shift Supervisor. The role involves rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays, with a 12-hour shift schedule that promotes work/life balance and reduces commuting days.

The Duties

  • Operate wastewater treatment facilities, monitor gauges and control panels, and interpret test results.
  • Operate valves, pumps, engines, and perform routine maintenance.
  • Maintain plant records and act as Designated Operator-in-Charge when required.
  • Operate vehicles and machinery as needed.
  • Foster good working relationships and provide excellent customer service.
  • Assist with inventory and supplies.
  • Supervise and train less experienced operators.

Ideal Candidate

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of responsible experience in wastewater treatment plant operation.
  • Valid Grade III WWTP Operator Certificate issued by California.
