Job summary

The City of Amarillo is seeking a Treatment Plant Operator III to join the River Road Water Reclamation division. Under indirect supervision on an assigned shift, you will operate and control quality of wastewater treatment processes and ensure effluent meets regulatory standards.

This full-time, on-site role requires weekend shifts, strong problem-solving, and ability to train junior operators. Valid Texas driver’s license and TCEQ Class B certification are required.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
• Minimum of three years' experience operating and maintaining a wastewater treatment plant.
• At least 100 hours of Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) training.
• TCEQ Class B Wastewater Treatment Certification required.
• Valid Texas Driver's License.

Responsibilities

• Make periodic plant rounds to verify proper operation.
• Monitor and record plant flow and performance.
• Collect samples for laboratory analysis and perform standard tests.
• Maintain records for operations control every 2 hours.
• Check pumps, motors, engines, blowers, and related equipment.
• Report plant status to supervisor and communicate hazards to oncoming operator.
• Assist in training lower-grade operators.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Responsible for the quality of effluent as set by Federal, State, and City regulations. Acts as responsible shift operator in charge. Shift work and weekends.**ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES*** Makes periodic rounds of the plant to assure that the plant process is operating properly.* Monitors and records the flow through the plant.* Collects samples for laboratory analysis.* Performs standard tests for operations control.* Maintains records for operations control of the plant (every 2 hours).* Checks all pumps, motors, engines, and blowers and associated equipment.* Fills out maintenance request forms on equipment not operating properly.* Reports the status of the plant to the supervisor.* Maintains flow distribution to; industrial, equalization, digestion, sludge, etc.* Removes debris from clarifier as needed.* Communicates to the oncoming operator the plant status and any hazards.* Responsible for training lesser grade operators.* Performs other job-related duties as assigned.**MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent and a minimum of three years of experience in the operations and maintenance of a Wastewater Treatment Plant and at least 100 hours of training approved by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. . TCEQ Class B Wastewater Treatment Certification required. Valid Texas Driver’s License required.**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES*** Ability to operate small office equipment, including calculator, copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.* Ability to operate computers for data entry and word processing.* Ability to operate and make minor repairs to small hand tools, small pieces of equipment, PH meters, analytical balances and CL2 safety equipment.* Ability to safely drive a pick-up truck.**ADA PROFILE**Reasonable accommodation will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
