Job summary

Brevard County is seeking a full-time Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator to manage operations at our treatment facilities. This role requires a valid Florida Department of Environmental Protection license and involves shift work, including weekends and holidays.

The ideal candidate will have extensive hands-on experience, as well as skills in operating pumps, motors, and performing routine tests. Successful applicants will contribute to emergency duties as required during disasters.

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP).
  • Five years of documented hands-on experience for TPO CLASS A.
  • Three years for TPO CLASS B and one year for TPO CLASS C.
  • Valid Florida driver's license and active FDEP license required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily operation, maintenance, and housekeeping at wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Take samples and conduct routine laboratory tests.
  • Operate various wastewater treatment plant equipment.

Skills

Hands-on experience in wastewater treatment

Position Type: Permanent Full Time/Part Time: Full Time

TPO A - Wastewater: $26.40 to $29.04 hourly

TPO B - Wastewater: $25.18 to $27.70 hourly

TPO C - Wastewater: $24.09 to $26.50 hourly

Positions are available in the North, Central, and South areas of the County. Work schedule involves shift work and includes evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed. Performs experienced crafts and trades work participating in the daily operation, maintenance, and housekeeping typical of wastewater treatment facilities. Work involves operating process pumps, motors, blowers, and other wastewater treatment plant equipment; taking samples of sewage, effluents, and sludge; performing simple, routine laboratory tests, including sludge settling, centrifuge, and chlorine residual tests; and cleaning treatment plant structures and equipment.

Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent, as required by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP).
  • TPO CLASS A - WW: Five (5) years [10,400 hours] of documented hands‑on experience working on‑site in a wastewater treatment facility.
  • TPO CLASS B - WW: Three (3) years [6,240 hours] of documented hands‑on experience working on‑site in a wastewater treatment facility.
  • TPO CLASS C - WW: One (1) year [2,080 hours] of documented hands‑on experience working on‑site in a wastewater treatment facility.
  • Additional college or technical coursework in subjects related to science or treatment plant operations is preferred.
Special Requirements
  • Must possess a valid Florida driver's license and maintain it during employment.
  • Must possess a valid active Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Class A, B, or C Wastewater Plant Operator's license and maintain it in an active status during employment.
  • Must successfully complete an OSHA‑compliant forklift operator training course that meets the requirements of 29 CFR 1910.178 and be able to safely operate a forklift.
  • Must be physically capable at all times of properly wearing and utilizing all required personal protective equipment (PPE), which may include respiratory protection.
  • Must be able to work planned and unplanned overtime, standby, and call‑out duties on a rotational basis, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • In the event of a hurricane, major storm, or disaster that may threaten the area, the employee will be required to perform emergency duties as directed.
