Job summary

Portland Water District seeks a skilled technician to operate and maintain its wastewater collection systems. Primary duties include mechanical and electrical maintenance of pumps, generators, and related equipment to ensure safe, compliant operation.

Qualifications

• Minimum requirements include graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.
• Vocational training in electrical/mechanical maintenance plus two years of related experience, or equivalent experience/training.
• Valid Class C Driver's License with clean driving record.
• Grade II or higher Collection System Operator's Certification or ability to obtain within two years of hire date.
• Journeyman Maine Electrical License preferred.
• Ability to troubleshoot electrical/mechanical problems and take corrective actions.
• Ability to work independently with good problem-solving skills.
• Knowledge of Dig-Safe Regulations.
• Ability to read blueprints and engineering drawings.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance, repair and overhaul pumps, generators, aerators, screens, boilers, chemical feed pumps, valves and similar equipment.
• Inspect pumping station equipment and structures daily or periodically.
• Operate valves, gates, pumps and monitor gauges, alarms and panels.
• Test equipment for malfunction and determine repairs.
• Locate and mark wastewater facilities as required.
• Install, test, modify and maintain equipment.
• Respond to troubleshooting calls for equipment and facilities.
• Direct personnel assigned to assist in their areas of responsibility.
• Assist Maintenance Foreperson with on-the-job training of new personnel.
• Perform standby duty and related mechanical/operational tasks as required.

Job description

Starting rate is $33.44/hr.,after six month probationary period, $35.19.

Purpose/Customer Impact

Primary duties are to perform all mechanical and operational tasks necessary for the safe, efficient operation of Portland Water District's (PWD) Wastewater Collection System Facilities.Secondary duties may include assisting other departments throughout PWD.

Interrelationships

Daily contact with internal support employees, contractors, outside utilities, customers and other members of the public.

Independent Action

Limited direct supervision and decision-making authority.Will be required to operate and maintain PWD pumping facilities and make process modifications to address; changing conditions which could affect our ability to convey wastewater, and to protect public health, safety, and regulatory compliance issues.Position will require on-call duty which will require independent emergency response to issues that may affect the operation of all PWD wastewater facilities.

Job Duties

• Perform preventive maintenance, repair and overhaul pumps, generators, aerators, screens, boilers, chemical feed pumps, valves and similar electrical/mechanical equipment and appurtenances.
• Inspect pumping station equipment and structures on a daily or periodic basis.
• Operate valves, gates and pumps and monitor gauges, meters, alarms, and panels to control and adjust pump station operation.
• Periodically inspect and test equipment for malfunction and determine needed repairs.
• Ability to locate and mark all wastewater facilities as required.
• Install, set up and test new equipment. Modify and maintain installed equipment.
• Answer all calls for troubleshooting of equipment and facilities.
• Direct personnel assigned to assist in their areas of responsibility.
• Assist Maintenance Foreperson with on-the-job training of new personnel.
• Perform standby duty.
• Perform other related mechanical/operational duties as required.

Physical Requirements

Sitting, standing, walking, climbing, reaching, bending, twisting, kneeling, squatting, visual accuracy, clear verbal and written communications,lifting (maximum 50 lbs.), driving.

Minimum Requirements

An individual must be able to perform Essential Duties satisfactorily, with or without reasonable accommodations.

• Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.
• Graduation from a vocational training school in electrical/mechanical maintenance plus two (2) years of electrical/mechanical maintenance experience, or any equivalent combination of experiences and training.
• Possess a valid Class C Driver's License, with a clean driving record.
• Possess a Grade II or higher Collection System Operator's Certification or the ability to obtain within two years of hire date.
• Possession of a Journeyman, State of Maine Electrical License, preferred.
• Ability to troubleshoot electrical/mechanical problems encountered on the job and take appropriate corrective actions.
• Ability to function independently, effective problem-solving skills.
• Knowledge of Dig-Safe Regulations.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings.
• Ability to understand, follow and relay oral and written instructions or descriptions encountered on the job.
• Ability to meet approved physical and medical standards that are required to conform with PWD’s safety procedures.
• Must be physically able to complete necessary tasks while wearing an approved respirator, as required.
• Basic computer skills; e-mail, MS Word, Excel, database entry, and maintenance management programs, etc.The willingness to pursue additional training as needed.
