What You'll Do

As a Wastewater System Technician I, you have a unique opportunity to change lives through exceptional service. The Department of Public Works is looking for a new team member to perform routine to difficult technical work in the maintenance of the wastewater collection system and easement network for the Town. Work is generally assigned in a specific area, such as easement inspection and maintenance or jet/vac truck operation under the general supervision of a Wastewater Collection Field Supervisor. However, employees are expected to be cross-trained and work in all areas. You'll have opportunities to perform acoustic testing on sanitary sewer mains, use a straight jet, tag along trailer jet, and jet vacuum combination trucks to clean sanitary sewer main lines. Who We Are Looking For

The Wastewater System Technician is essential in maintaining over 1,000 miles of sanitary sewer lines, 26,000 manholes, utility easements and 270 miles of storm water pipe, including catch basins. With this in mind, we prioritize hiring candidates who are willing to work hard and display a passion for helping the community. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, and take initiative to go above and beyond to complete wastewater system maintenance and repairs. The candidate will be excited to learn new skills and technology. We are seeking individuals with flexibility and a commitment to teamwork as the position performs on-call after hours standby duty on a rotating basis. Employees in this role are also key members of the Public Works Leaf Collection and Adverse Weather Response teams. Most importantly, the candidate will take pride in their accomplishments and the difference they make in the Cary community.

Typical Tasks

Participates in a comprehensive sewer line maintenance program; keeps sewer lines open and working properly; carries out preventative maintenance program;

Mows and clears easements; monitors vandalism to outfall lines; inspects and marks easements; clears trees with precision; reads easement maps and plans mowing schedule;

Inspects easements and manholes; delivers letters for notification of easement cutting; flags easements;

Locates manholes and flags easement boundaries; inspects material to be cut and determines if it is cut by town staff or contractors;

Locates and inspects manholes for inflow and infiltration issues; creates database of inflow and infiltration issues and GPS manhole locations;

Works with contractors videoing lines; finds access points for contractors;

Addresses questions from the public;

Operates specialized TV equipment to monitor the condition of lines; works with MapInfo for line locations and documentation of work completed; cameras lines for final inspection;

Installs and programs flow meters in confined spaces;

Samples and monitors wastewater discharge;

Maps lines and maintains files;

Operates jet truck to cut roots and flush lines;

Performs maintenance on equipment;

Maintains storm drains and keeps clear of debris;

Replaces broken storm drain lids; prepares area around broken drains that cannot be immediately fixed;

Repairs sewer clean-outs;

Responds to sewer calls; unstops blockages using tape or jet depending on nature of the blockage; applies de-greasing chemicals;

Responds to sewer spills; builds dams and takes action to contain spill; cleans up spills; pumps sewage if necessary; applies lime, soil, etc. as necessary;

Performs acoustic testing operations to determine cleanliness of sewer mains;

Responds to sewer odor calls; checks manholes for blockages and talks to homeowners;

Performs rotating "on-call" after hours standby duty;

Operates equipment during snow and inclement weather conditions;

Performs Other Job-related Tasks As Required.

Considerable knowledge of wastewater collection systems and their maintenance; Considerable knowledge of specialized equipment operation; Considerable knowledge of wastewater collection line construction and repair; Considerable knowledge of easement maintenance; Considerable knowledge of tree cutting and equipment operation; Considerable knowledge of system mapping; Considerable knowledge of GPS equipment; Ability to work independently; Ability to respond to emergencies; Ability to operate heavy and specialized equipment; Ability to develop and apply appropriate safety practices; Ability to develop databases and keep accurate records; Ability to work in adverse working conditions; Ability to make repairs; Ability to communicate effectively.

Physical Requirements

An employee in this class must possess significant physical ability. Work requires the employee to have the ability to lift moderate to heavy items, dig with hand tools, crawl into tight spaces, and work on lines and other items which require skillful movement in the hands. The ability to see is necessary to read handwritten and typewritten materials and to view maps and testing equipment. An employee must also be able to hear, speak, and smell.

An employee must have the ability to work unassisted, stand for long periods of time, perform manual labor, and work in inclement weather. The ability to work in challenging and sometimes dangerous environmental conditions is also required.

Minimum And Preferred Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school with some relevant work in wastewater collections systems maintenance and equipment operation.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Possession of a valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with an acceptable driving record, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.

Grade I Wastewater Collection Certification, or the ability to obtain within a 12 months

National Incident Management System (NIMS) ICS 100 and ICS 700 training/certification required (provided).

Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal history check, motor vehicle records check, education verification and credit history review) and satisfactory reference checks prior to employment.
