Town of Red Springs is hiring for a role in water and wastewater facility operations. The position involves monitoring plant performance, collecting samples, conducting laboratory tests, and maintaining equipment and records to ensure safe potable water and compliant waste treatment.
Responsibilities include data logging, on-call rotation, and working with safety procedures. Candidates should have a high school diploma with chemistry/biology coursework or related experience.
An employee in this class performs a variety of operational,laboratory and maintenance duties designed to produce safe treatment of potablewater and disposal of domestic and commercial waste materials. Work includesmonitoring the plant's operation through observation, mechanical readings andthe results of standard chemical and biological tests and to make necessaryadjustments in the process as conditions or test results dictate. Other dutiesinclude performing standard laboratory duties and test and assisting with plantand facilities maintenance. Work also includes substantial record keeping ofwork activities. Employees participate ina rotation with responsibilityfor weekly on call and weekend operation of water and wastewater treatmentplants, lift stations, wells and test sampling and is subject to emergencycall-back. Employees are subject to hazards associated with plant operationsincluding working both inside and outside environments, in hot and cold weatherand exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, moving mechanical parts,electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, oils, poorventilation and working in small confined spaces. Employees may be required towear respirators when working around chlorine tanks. Work around wastewater isalso subject to the final standards of OSHA on blood borne pathogens. Work isperformed under the supervision of a Treatment Plant Supervisor and is reviewedby observation, conferences and review of records for adherence to operationalstandards, instructions and safety practices.
Loads chemicals on truck sprayer, drives through community andsprays for mosquitos; places pesticide briquettes in ponds.
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
*****Ability to obtain North Carolina well water operator's Grade Ccertificate and Grade 1 wastewater operator certificate within 12 months ofhire date. Employee should not be removed from probation until certification is achieved. Grade B well andGrade 1 wastewater operator certifications desirable. ******
Graduation from high school supplemented by coursework in chemistry or biology and some experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment, preferably in a water or wastewatertreatment plant; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
