Wastewater Collection Worker: Grade 11 Base Hourly: $19.87/hr.--$30.23/hr. Base Annual: $41,329.60--$62,878.40
JOB SUMMARY: This position participates in the construction, operation, and maintenance of the city’s wastewater collection system. An incumbent in this position may be designated “Wastewater Collection Worker” or “Wastewater Collection Technician I or II.”
MAJOR DUTIES: Participates in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the wastewater collection system. Inspects new assets prior to acceptance by Water Services. Inspects sewer manholes to document condition and complete rehabilitation as needed. Maintains, repairs, and cleans lift stations. Installs sewer mains, manholes, and services. Operates CCTV equipment to identify blockages and perform and document condition assessments. Operates a jet truck to clean sewer lines. Makes post-construction repairs to streets, sidewalks, landscaping, and lawns. Reports sanitary sewer overflows to ADEM and takes appropriate action. Locates and makes sewer taps for customers. Performs line locate tasks for city and third-party construction and excavation. Performs preventive maintenance on equipment and tools. Provides information to customers and assists in resolving customer problems. Performs related duties.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 18 years or older. High School Diploma, GED and/or equivalent work experience. Valid Driver’s license. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid CDL. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Possession of or ability to readily obtain Grade IC wastewater certification.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION: Knowledge of work safety principles and practices, including relevant OSHA regulations. Knowledge of wastewater collection system operation, repair, and maintenance principles. Knowledge of city and department policies and procedures. Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance principles. Knowledge of sanitary sewer overflow guidelines. Skill in interpreting maps, as-built records, construction plans, and other related documents. Skill in problem solving. Skill in prioritizing and planning. Skill in the provision of customer services. Skill in interpersonal relations. Skill in oral and written communication.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK: The work consists of related technical duties. Inclement work environments contribute to the complexity of the work. The purpose of this position is to participate in the construction and maintenance of the city’s wastewater collection system. Successful performance helps ensure the effective and efficient operation of the department and compliance with all regulatory requirements.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell. The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dirt, dust, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, and irritating chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc. Physical strength, ability, and mobility to perform all essential job functions with or without accommodation. Must be willing to work overtime, non-standard work hours, holidays, shifts, and weekends as necessary. Must be willing to be on-call.
