Job summary

Recology King County seeks a Waste Zero Intern to assist with waste diversion programs and community-wide education. The role includes audits, data entry, field work, and supporting digital design and presentations.

Hybrid schedule with three days in the office, Monday–Friday 9am–5pm, based in Seattle. Ideal candidates are recent University of Washington graduates or students, with administrative/events experience, strong communication skills, and a valid driver's license.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Student or Alumni of the University of Washington.
  • 1 year of related administrative and events coordination experience.
  • Related coursework and/or training.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with waste audits and diversion strategies for customers.
  • Maintain a file system, data entry, and audit reports.
  • Perform field work including lid-lift audits and site visits.
  • Support digital design, social media, and presentations.
  • Coordinate programs and community events.
  • Represent Recology at events to promote recycling.

Role of the Waste Zero Intern (NOTE: Recent University of Washington graduate strongly preferred)

Under direct supervision, assists with the coordination and administration of waste diversion programs and community-wide services and events involving education, communication of community-wide services, and audits of recyclable materials from residential, industrial, and/or commercial customers.

Hybrid (3 days in office) Shift: Monday-Friday 9am-5pm

Essential Responsibilities
  • Assists with simple waste audits for customers and contributes to diversion strategies to outline customers’ areas for opportunity. May help to implement service changes and follow-up items to ensure diversion programs are successful.
  • Assists with maintaining a file system for customer information, ensures data entry into systems, and produces audit reports.
  • Completes field work as directed by the Waste Zero Manager, including but not limited to, lid-lift waste audits, site visits, and monitoring waste diversion programs.
  • Contributes to digital design products, Social Media, and its implementation.
  • May help Waste Zero Specialist prepare speeches and presentations.
  • Under the direction of the Waste Zero Team, coordinates programs and community events.
  • Collaborates on ideas on how to educate customers and the general public about Recology’s resource recovery services and programs.
  • May deliver public education programs to fulfill contract requirements and/or sustainability goals.
  • Leads the setup and break down of materials related to events and activities.
  • Coordinates to ensure all materials and event collateral are ready prior to each activity.
  • Oversees the staff outreach booth and represents Recology at community events to promote recycling, composting, and waste reduction.
  • Supports the Waste Zero Team on a variety of community outreach projects.
  • Tracks and records outreach contacts and activities.
  • Ability to have a flexible work schedule based on business needs.
  • Travels frequently to various off‑site events.
  • Driving a company vehicle will be required from time to time.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

  • Student or Alumni of the University of Washington.
  • 1 year of related administrative and events coordination experience.
  • Related coursework and/or training.
  • Computer programs, including the Microsoft Office suite of applications.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Valid driver's license required.
