Job summary

Recology King County in Seattle is seeking a skilled Journeyman Mechanic for night shift maintenance of heavy vehicles and landfill equipment. You will diagnose, repair and service powertrains, hydraulics, electrical and safety systems to keep operations running smoothly.

The role requires four years of mechanical experience, a valid CDL, and the ability to lead others on the shop floor. We offer a comprehensive benefits package and a culture focused on environmental stewardship.

Qualifications

  • Four years of progressively responsible mechanical experience as a journeyman mechanic.
  • Waste and recycling industry experience preferred.
  • Valid Class A or B CDL within 6 months of hire or have DOT medical certificate if not yet licensed.
  • Experience with diesel and/or CNG engines and heavy equipment components.
  • Familiarity with DOT out-of-service criteria and safety audits.
  • Basic computer literacy for paperwork and data entry.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses, tests and repairs vehicles and heavy landfill equipment, including powertrains, drivetrains, electrical, steering, braking, exhaust and suspension.
  • Diagnoses and repairs refuse vehicles and transfer trailers' hydraulic and body systems.
  • Maintains processing equipment such as balers, conveyors and motors.
  • Performs basic fabrication using welding equipment and tools.
  • Orders and maintains shop parts, tools, and supplies; completes paperwork and data entries.
  • Acts as lead worker by directing others and reviewing work.

Shift: NIGHT SHIFT - Monday - Friday, 10:00pm - 6:30am

The Role

Responsible for mechanical maintenance services; maintains, inspects and repairs equipment and vehicles to ensure safety and on-going operation.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Diagnoses, tests and repairs vehicles and/or heavy landfill equipment including, but not limited to, powertrains and drivetrains, as well as electrical, steering, braking, exhaust and suspension systems.
  • Diagnoses, tests and repairs refuse vehicle and transfer trailer body systems including, but not limited to, hydraulic, body control, electrical and body mechanical systems.
  • Diagnoses, tests, repairs and maintains processing equipment such as balers, conveyors, hoppers, electric motors and controls, as well as maintenance shop and company facilities.
  • Performs basic fabrication work using welding equipment, torches, tools and/or machinery.
  • Orders and maintains shop parts, tools, equipment and supplies.
  • Accurately and efficiently completes paperwork and/or computer database entries relating to the work performed.
  • Acts as a lead worker by regularly instructing and directing others by assigning, reviewing and checking work.
Qualifications
  • Four years of progressively responsible mechanical experience as a journeyman mechanic (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Waste and recycling industry experience preferred.
  • Experience and knowledge of DOT Out-of-Service Criteria including CHP B.I.T. Inspections and DOT compliance audits.
  • Experience working in a maintenance facility or related environment with vehicles, processing equipment such as balers, conveyors, hoppers, electric motors and landfill equipment preferred.
  • Expert knowledge of diesel and/or compressed natural gas engines, heavy equipment mechanical components and parts, as well as fabrication tools and techniques.
  • Knowledge of alternating and direct current electrical controls and motor systems.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local job site health and safety rules, regulations and best practices; understanding of potential job hazards.
  • Basic computer programs.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Graduation from a formalized mechanical trade school highly desirable.
  • Valid Class A or B Commercial Drivers License with no restrictions required within 6 months of hire.
  • Candidate(s) without valid Class A or B Commercial Drivers License upon hire must possess a valid DOT medical certificate and instructional permit for a Class A or B Commercial Drivers License with air brake endorsement prior to hire.
