Job summary

The City of Charleston is seeking a diligent refuse and recyclables collector. You will load cans, bags, and items from assigned routes into the collection vehicle, operate compacting equipment, and ensure proper disposal at designated sites.

Work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, with additional shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed to meet departmental goals. Candidates should have a high school diploma or GED and a commitment to safety and teamwork.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; previous municipal sanitation experience preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to follow safety protocols and operate basic collection equipment.
• Strong teamwork and reliable attendance are essential.

Responsibilities

• Picks up refuse and recyclable cans, bins, bags and other discarded items on assigned collection route and dumps into refuse packer, garbage truck or other designated collection vehicle.
• Operates equipment that compresses collected refuse and other material.
• Dumps refuse, recyclable and other collected materials at City landfill or other designated disposal site.
