Job summary

The City of Newton, NC is seeking a sanitation truck operator to collect garbage, yard waste, and recyclables on assigned routes using a rear packer and related equipment. The role entails operating large vehicles, performing basic vehicle checks, and assisting other crews as needed.

Applicants should have a high school diploma or GED and 1–4 years of experience operating heavy equipment such as sanitation or dump trucks. A valid North Carolina CDL-B is required; CDL-A is preferred.

Qualifications

• Strong knowledge of operating large sanitation/collection trucks.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
• Ability to explain policies and procedures to residents and businesses.
• Willingness to work in all weather, holidays, and overtime.

Responsibilities

• Drive a sanitation truck on assigned routes for curbside collection of waste and recyclables.
• Operate other equipment if trained/certified (front loading, rear loading, chipper, hook lift).
• Perform routine checks and basic preventive repairs; report maintenance needs.
