Job summary

University of Maryland Medical System is seeking a Waste Handler to support sanitation and safety across the medical center. You will haul waste, keep areas clean, and follow Joint Commission, OSHA, and HIPAA requirements.

Responsibilities include cleaning and sanitizing waste areas, loading waste materials for disposal, and maintaining a safe, compliant work environment while coordinating with team members.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to use pagers, radios and other housekeeping equipment.
  • Ability to work well with others and under time constraints.

Job description

Job Requirements

Under direct supervision, haul waste from waste collection areas to the facility’s main waste pick‑up area. Keep areas clean and sanitized. Take appropriate precautions to ensure the safety of patients, visitors and other associates in accordance with the Joint Commission, OSHA and other regulatory agencies. Requires access to medication storage areas.

Duties
  • Clean and sanitize assigned waste areas within the medical center, including floors, walls, waste collection carts, tipster, and collection rooms.
  • Load waste materials onto trailers or designated dumpsters or conveyances; clean and maintain the waste removal dock area and dumpsters.
  • Follow all departmental and medical center sanitation procedures.
  • Adhere to all established systems and training programs to provide a safe working environment; maintain knowledge of and comply with Joint Commission, OSHA and other local, state and federal regulations; adhere to confidentiality and HIPAA requirements.
  • Provide hospitable service and follow service recovery principles consistently.
Qualifications
