Job description

Reuters is seeking an editor to run its Washington news report and broader U.S. news report through weekend hours, including serving as a backup editor for our White House coverage team, during a consequential and newsy period. The editor will work closely with reporters and other editors to chase spot stories and deliver scoops primarily on Washington news and the Trump administration, with a secondary focus on general news from across the United States. The position requires strong news judgment, strong writing and editing ability, and experience covering the biggest and fastest-moving stories. A strong commitment to speed, flexibility at working with various beat reporters, and strong organizational and planning skills are a must. The ability to work closely with visual journalists on spot coverage is important.

The job will have a four-day work week, Friday-Monday, with Friday largely spent editing stories and planning, Saturday-Sunday spent running spot and beat coverage, and Monday used to ensure strong carryover of coverage into a new week.

The job is based in Washington, with the successful candidate working in the office a minimum of Friday and Monday to collaborate with colleagues and another day over the weekend.

About the Role

As the Washington/U.S. Weekend Editor, you will:

  • Work with reporters to cover spot developments and to break news, primarily on Washington topics, including the White House and foreign policy, and secondarily on broader U.S. news.
  • Strategically plan ahead for weekend needs, working with a wide array of editors to ensure the strongest coverage.
  • Ensure speed, depth, and quality in everything we publish: from spot news through to short-term scoops.
  • Collaborate effectively on stories of global interest with colleagues worldwide, including those covering national security and business.
  • Work closely with photo and video colleagues to ensure fast coverage of spot news and compelling visual storytelling on key stories.
  • Work four days a week, Friday-Monday, with three days in the office. The role reports to the Washington bureau chief.

About You

You are a fit for the role of Washington/U.S. Weekend Editor if you have:

  • At least five years of experience editing and reporting.
  • Past experience managing journalists.
  • A deep understanding of U.S. government and policy issues, plus experience covering fast-moving spot news such as weather or natural disasters.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • A proven track record of framing and editing both breaking news and deeper stories.
  • Appreciation for and understanding of visual reporting around both spot news and deeper storytelling.
