Position Summary

Teach warm water exercise class for all levels of fitness while creating a positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement.

Essential Functions

  • Teach a safe, effective workout emphasizing muscle strength, endurance and flexibility.
  • Develop and execute exercise routines to meet class descriptions.
  • Communicate purpose of each exercise to participants including particular muscle involvement.
  • Teach methods of increasing or decreasing intensity of moves.
  • Create and maintain positive relationships with members and staff.
  • Motivate and encourage participants to attain their personal goals.
  • Demonstrate proper use and maintenance of equipment. Return all equipment to the proper storage area.
  • Ensure YMCA aquatic policies and guidelines are followed at all times.
  • Maintain accurate class records as required by the department (i.e. – attendance sheets, accidents reports, etc.).
  • Promote other YMCA programs and volunteerism in classes.
  • Communicate any problems or incidents to supervisor promptly.
  • Maintain accurate time cards.
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.

Child Protection Responsibilities

  • Adheres to policies related to boundaries with youth.
  • Participates in required abuse risk management training.
  • Reports suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
  • Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.
  • Adheres to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least18 years of age.
  • 6 months of previous experience teaching or participating in a water fitness class.
  • CPR, First Aid and AED certifications.
  • YMCA Swim Instructor, Lifeguarding and Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program certifications.
  • Ability to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal, written and interpersonal)
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.

The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions (exposure to outside weather is frequent if working at an outdoor pool). The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
