Job Summary

University Housing & Dining Services, at Oregon State University, is looking for multiple Warehouse Workers.

These are full-time, regular (12-month), classified positions on the Corvallis campus.

Responsibilities:

The purpose of this position is to provide support to Dining Services and University Catering by safely transporting food and equipment, and by maintaining the cleanliness and maintenance records of assigned vehicle(s). This position supports the Warehouse for Dining Services, supports the collection of Eco2Go containers for Dining Services, and works with students on expediting catering events, teaching them to safely drive oversize vehicles. This requires strategic and efficient planning of time, teamwork, and attention to detail.

University Housing & Dining Services offers a variety of dining options across the Oregon State University campus. We are a self-operated food service department that serves food in micro-restaurants using fresh ingredients. We are known for the great care we take of students and other guests.

University Housing & Dining Services houses over 4,800 students and offers a variety of living and dining options in 15 residence halls, a limited number of student and family apartments, three dining centers, 10-14 convenience and coffee shop locations across the Corvallis campus, a market, and a catering operation. Key Responsibilities

35% Delivery Duties

  • Daily informal meetings with Management to review logistics, and other pertinent details pertaining to the next day’s needs.
  • Reviews daily delivery sheets, plans and coordinates the daily delivery schedule.
  • Gathers and loads the truck with items for delivery to other units; makes all deliveries in a safe and timely manner. Loads and unloads delivery carts and service wares on truck for return to home unit.
  • Reports any shortages and overages to management.
  • Assists in coordinating exchanges of products and supplies between units, and storage locations.
  • Responsible for reading, filling, delivering orders and tracking delivery paperwork.
  • Operates box truck and lift gate daily. Operates other Dining vehicles as needed.
  • May make deliveries to students in UHDS -provided housing.
  • Gather necessary supplies and equipment for set-up of catering orders and make catering food and equipment deliveries as needed. This will include keeping propane and outdoor cooking equipment stocked and stored properly.
  • Sort and expedite food and beverage from the kitchen and coolers.
  • Collect used Eco2Go containers from exterior collection locations and deliver clean containers across campus to support satellite units.
35% Receiving Deliveries & Organizing Storerooms
  • Properly receives and stores deliveries.
  • In the absence of the Property Specialist, may be required to process invoices.
  • Assists Property Specialist in inventory. Supports Property Specialist in inventory processes.
  • Maintains organization in coolers, storerooms and retails spaces.
  • May be required to utilize a pallet jack or other lift-assist devices.
10% Leading and Training of Student Employees
  • Assist in implementing the departments’ employee-training program.
  • Continually train and coach students in the areas of customer service, food handling, health department compliance, transporting of food to off-site locations, event preparation, and clean-up.
  • Train students on driving box trucks, cargo vans, how to use a lift gate, and vehicle use expectations, as well as how to respond to an accident.
  • Review completed student work for accuracy and timeliness.
  • Assign and prioritize work as needed.
10% Safety and Sanitation
  • Cleans all transit cabinets, warmers and carts regularly as needed.
  • Creates sanitation expectations with students. Rotates inventories as needed.
  • Maintains high sanitation standards for truck and food carts by regularly cleaning and sanitizing.
  • Maintains temperature logs and other food safety procedures during the transport process.
5% Vehicle Maintenance and Service
  • Inspects vehicle daily and reports any defects or mechanical malfunctions to immediate supervisor.
  • Responsible for fueling vehicle and for scheduling vehicle for preventive maintenance servicing.
  • Completes and maintains accurate service records and weekly mileage forms.
  • Maintains appropriate security of vehicle at all times.
5% Other projects and duties as required
  • Work cooperatively with other staff and student workers to complete tasks.
  • Use a computer to check work-related email, complete online forms, check work schedule, and complete timesheets.
  • Cover for Property Specialist when absent.
  • Attends unit staff meetings and departmental meetings. Complete required trainings.
  • Special projects assigned by supervisor.

What You Will Need

  • One year of experience in food service outside the home OR delivery driving in a non-passenger vehicle for at least three months.
  • Communication and customer service skills to interact effectively with Dining Services employees, as well as other campus staff.
  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to understand English and convey written and verbal directions/instructions, recipes, safety information, machine instructions, etc.
  • Good customer service skills with external and internal customers, including the ability to respond to them in a positive manner.
  • Demonstrable ability to build successful working relationships with individuals & communities of diverse backgrounds and personal characteristics.   • State of Oregon OLCC server permit within 30 days of employment.

This position may be designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OAR 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 24 months.


This position must possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license and maintain a satisfactory driving record while serving in the position; therefore, the incumbent must provide a copy of their driving history for the past 2 years from the issuing state’s Dept. of Motor Vehicles.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • One year of food service experience.
  • One year of warehouse or receiving experience.
  • Proven experience in safe driving of a delivery vehicle.
  • Experience driving and loading a box truck, as well as using a lift gate and pallet jack
  • Experience with vehicle maintenance.
  • Experience with logistics and efficiently moving products from point A to point B.
  • Knowledge of departmental food specifications and procedures for safe handling and transport of food.
  • Experience with lead work and training employees.
  • Strong work ethic and self-motivation.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Occasionally requires a flexible work schedule. Working early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays; with different days off, and different start and stop times depending on scheduled events.
  • This is a physically active job in an institutional kitchen environment. Incumbent will experience long working periods of standing on a hard floor; working with commercial equipment; fluctuation in work flow, temperature and noise level.
  • Must be able to work shift on your feet and perform frequent arm movements. Bending, lifting, and pushing repetitive motions are required in performing tasks.
  • The employee in this position will often be required to lift/carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds; and pushing and pulling of objects weighing up to 500 lbs. (i.e. using a manual pallet jack to move a loaded pallet).
  • Must have the ability to make quick decisions under stress.
  • OSU is a 100% tobacco-free campus.
WORK SCHEDULE
  • UHDS dining operations run seven days per week, so early mornings, weekends, evenings, and occasional holiday work will be required. OSU requires the ability to work a flexible schedule based on the needs of the business.
  • Good attendance is crucial for stability and day-to-day business needs. Must follow attendance schedule and break schedule, and must be on time and in uniform when shift begins.
  • This position is deemed essential and the incumbent is expected to report to work during inclement weather, emergency and other University work curtailments or closures.
  • Must be flexible and willing to work in any area of the dining center as directed.
