The Material Handler is responsible for receiving, sorting, processing, and handling donated goods to support retail sales, recycling, and facility operations. Responsibilities include retrieving donations, evaluating items for resale or recycling, maintaining organized work areas, and assisting with basic facility and operational tasks. The role requires reliability, attention to detail, independence, and collaboration with staff in a fast-paced thrift store environment. The position may also assist customers on the sales floor, help carry purchased merchandise, and operate the cash register as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Retrieve donations from vehicles at the donation door.
  • Sort donated items and place items in the proper processing areas.
  • Identify items for recycling potential as needed.
  • Maintain a clean work area and secure tools for recycling and facility operations.
  • Process recycling donations, identification, pricing and sorting.
  • Work with management to maintain an active list of facility projects & improvements, prioritized.
  • Assess best option for electronic donations: recycling or sales floor.
  • Make repairs to donated or TSA-owned property and equipment when possible.
  • Empty trash cans and keep warehouse/outdoor areas clear of debris.
  • Mentor and train donation receiving staff/volunteers on items with recycling or sales potential; track high-valued items with management.
  • Maintain recycling bins with well-defined categories.
  • Monitor donations for items usable as part of facility improvement plan.
  • Seek community support for donations of materials, product, and services to support store goals.
  • Perform other duties as instructed by management.
  • Assist front-end operations as needed, including operating a cash register and basic customer service. Cross-training will be provided.

The staff is expected to treat all vendors and customers courteously. Customer complaints should be handled professionally; notify the manager on duty of the facts and disposition if a complaint occurs.

Education and Work Experience
  • High School degree or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience in a warehouse environment or equivalent.
  • Preferred experience with disassembly of electrical items, computer equipment, and parts extraction.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Team player with a cooperative spirit.
  • Ability to operate a forklift and baler, preferred.
  • Ability to manage assigned projects and work independently to achieve results.
  • Strong English verbal communication.
  • Ability to gather and compile research related to recycled product values.
  • Courteous interaction with the public.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain poise under pressure.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in production and/or warehouse areas.
  • Ability to disassemble donated items to harvest recycled materials.
  • Basic janitorial duties (sweeping, mopping, trash, restocking supplies).
  • Must complete and adhere to Protecting the Mission requirements and pass a TSA background check.
  • Ability to operate a cash register and count money.
Software Skills
  • Basic computer skills.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist as needed.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods on hard floors.
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull, and reach overhead.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs repeatedly.
  • Ability to produce written information such as donor receipts.
  • Ability to understand written information.
