Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Plan, organize, and direct activities and workers concerned with the construction of underground structures and systems.
  • Interpret and explain plans to workers and subcontractors.
  • Train employees in the proper use of tools and monitor their activities.
  • Take actions to deal with the results of delays or emergencies at the construction site.
  • Ensure that all aspects of the work are done in a safe manner.
  • Ensure the quality of work is in compliance with project specifications, safety codes, and other regulations.
  • Make appropriate recommendations as to materials, equipment, and manpower requirements.
  • Prepare and submit progress and cost tracking reports.
  • Confer with personnel, superintendents, and subcontractors to discuss and resolve matters such as work procedures, complaints, and construction.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as directed by division and corporate management.
  • Travel as required to attend meetings, site visits, training, etc.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of materials, methods, tools involved in construction, and related PPE.
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment and safety policies and procedures to comply with company policy, local, state, or federal laws.
  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in planning, resource allocation, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Ability to motivate, develop, and direct people as they work.
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.
  • Ability to identify problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills required.

Education/Experience:

  • High School degree or equivalent.
  • 6 to 8 years underground work experience which provided a thorough working knowledge of all phases of underground excavation methods and techniques.
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years experience supervising others.
