YOUR PURPOSE
As a Utility Locator, you'll play a crucial role in protecting essential city infrastructure by accurately identifying and marking water, sewer, and other utility lines before excavation work is carried out by utility companies, contractors, and private residents. You'll ensure that everything runs smoothly by maintaining and calibrating cutting-edge locating equipment, conducting routine maintenance checks, and ensuring you have all the necessary supplies to get the job done efficiently.
Essential Tasks
What You'll Do
- Drive to designated work sites to perform utility locating, construction staking, and related tasks.
- Transport equipment and supplies to and from work sites; establish safety zones; utilize specialized systems and equipment for accurate operations and documentation; review maps, conduct technical calculations, and prioritize tasks based on urgency and status; adhere to established safety protocols and procedures.
- Maintain equipment, supplies, and vehicles, including performing system checks, calibrating tools, cleaning, and carrying out routine preventative maintenance; report unresolved equipment issues; ensure all equipment, systems, and vehicles are in working order.
- Prepare and maintain field notes and other essential documentation; enter data into the locating program or relevant recording systems as required.
- Accurately locate and mark City-owned water and sewer infrastructure.
- Organize and manage daily workload efficiently to ensure timely completion of tasks.
- Utilize GIS systems to research and gather necessary work data.
- Perform light excavation with a shovel to expose buried utilities when necessary.
- Perform other related duties as assigned, ensuring all tasks are completed in a professional and efficient manner.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Minimum of two years of related experience in utility locating.
- Valid, unrestricted North Carolina driver's license, or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire (if currently holding a driver's license from another state).
Preferred Qualifications
- Three or more years of related experience in utility locating.
- Familiarity with basic utility infrastructure and the ability to interpret GIS data.
- Knowledge of various utility locating devices and their applications.
