Role Description

The Individual Life Facultative Underwriting team is seeking a VP, Underwriting Executive, to lead and develop a team of experienced underwriters while helping deliver exceptional underwriting and service to our clients. This is a hands‑on leadership role for an accomplished life reinsurance underwriter who enjoys developing others, building strong client relationships, and contributing to underwriting excellence.

The successful candidate will foster a high performing and collaborative team, provide technical underwriting guidance, manage relationships with assigned clients, and partner across the organization to continually enhance our underwriting practices and client experience. The Underwriting Executive will also maintain a small active underwriting caseload, remaining closely connected to our facultative business and evolving risk landscape.

Responsibilities

  • Manage team performance and development through ongoing performance management, regular individual and team discussions, thoughtful delegation of responsibilities, and appropriate underwriting authorities. Help team members identify development opportunities and achieve their individual goals while maintaining high standards for underwriting quality and client service.
  • Promote underwriting excellence by reviewing and providing second signature approval on underwriting decisions, providing technical guidance and consultation on complex cases, partnering with Medical staff and underwriting colleagues as appropriate, and ensuring sound and consistent application of underwriting philosophy and guidelines.
  • Maintain underwriting expertise by managing a small active underwriting caseload, demonstrating sound risk assessment and remaining connected to the complexities and evolving needs of our facultative business.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships by developing a thorough understanding of assigned clients, including their business, products, procedures, treaty considerations, and service expectations. Serve as a primary underwriting resource for assigned clients and provide timely, thoughtful support that strengthens Gen Re’s position as a valued reinsurance partner.
  • Monitor client and business performance by identifying trends in areas such as facultative activity, placement, and service. Share insights and proactively identify opportunities to improve the client experience and strengthen relationships.
  • Advance underwriting practices by partnering with underwriting leadership, Medical, Actuarial, and other stakeholders to identify opportunities to enhance underwriting guidelines, risk assessment, workflows, efficiency, and the overall client experience.
  • Contribute to key underwriting initiatives and projects by effectively managing responsibilities and resources, supporting team member participation, and helping ensure projects are completed successfully and on schedule.
  • Support effective operations across the underwriting team by partnering with other Underwriting Executives and underwriting leadership to manage workflow, staffing needs, and priorities and by providing leadership coverage when needed.
  • Represent Gen Re with clients and within the industry through periodic client meetings, visits, conferences, and other appropriate industry activities.
Role Qualifications and Experience
  • Extensive individual life reinsurance underwriting experience with demonstrated expertise evaluating complex medical, non-medical, financial, highly substandard, and multi-impairment risks.
  • Strong underwriting judgment, risk assessment capabilities, and a proven track record of delivering high-quality underwriting decisions.
  • Deep knowledge of life underwriting principles, mortality assessment, and the relationship between risk selection, pricing, and business objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, mentor, and influence others; prior people management experience preferred but not required.
  • Proven success developing and maintaining strong client relationships and providing consultative underwriting expertise.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and relationship management skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders across all levels of the organization.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills with the ability to navigate complex business and underwriting challenges.
  • Ability to lead change, drive continuous improvement, and effectively manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
