The Role:
Reporting to the Head of P&C, U.S. Markets, the VP, Structured Underwriting will be a key leader in the origination, client management, underwriting and structuring of the group’s growing portfolio of structured P&C reinsurance transactions. This role requires a combination of strong analytical skills and business acumen, as well as the ability to collaborate with and influence stakeholders across all levels.
This role is U.S. based and may be full-time remote or associated on a hybrid basis with our Blue Bell, PA office.
Responsibilities:
o Take a leading role, working with the Head of P&C, U.S. Markets and the Business Development team, in producing flow of new structured P&C transactions for CLRe
o Work closely with broker/clients at the initial stage of an inquiry to understand client needs, and determine whether we have an appetite and/or mandate to proceed with the transaction; win buy-in for our solutions, and establish CLRe as “reinsurer of choice” in the market
o Work closely with Business Development and Pricing/Underwriting teams to develop, refine, and review structured reinsurance transactions
o Support these teams in developing specialized knowledge of reinsurance solutions and structures for the U.S. market
o Work collaboratively across the team in managing all aspects of assessing, underwriting, negotiating and closing such transactions - work effectively with internal parties to achieve this end including legal, accounting, risk management, actuarial and others as needed
o Draft and present transaction proposals for senior management and boards
o Develop, maintain and manage internal and external stakeholder and client relationships
o Provide valuable insight into latest market trends, the competitive landscape, and emerging risks
o Influence reinsurance product structuring and strategies in the evolving market to maintain profitability of the business
o Ensure compliance with the group’s policies, and regulatory and legal requirements
o Regular travel as required to meet with clients and brokers, attend industry conferences, and interact with CLRe offices (primarily Toronto and Blue Bell)
o Ensure that brilliant basics are in place in all facets of the business
Experience:
o An experienced market practitioner in the U.S. Structured Property and Casualty reinsurance sector, with strong industry relationships among both reinsurance brokers and insurers
o A deep understanding of P&C insurance products and reinsurance structures, market trends, and regulatory landscape
Education:
o Educated with a university degree and insurance qualification

o Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence
o Ability to engage clients, brokers, leadership and colleagues and gain trust as a business partner
o Ability to influence business strategy and negotiate transaction terms and conditions
o An analytical/inquisitive mindset with strong technical skills, able to make quantitative and qualitative assessments of risk, and be solution-focused when navigating risk transfer and capital framework assessments
o Sound business judgement and professional integrity, strong work ethic, and a desire to succeed in a fast-paced environment
o Highly collaborative and versatile, with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
o Excellent communication skills (written, verbal and presentation)
o Excellent networking skills across all levels of an organization
o Strong organizational and planning capability
o Disciplined and focused on accountability and delivery of results
