Overview
Job Summary: The Vice President, Software Engineering provides leadership in aligning technology development with business objectives for assigned platforms and/or technologies. The incumbent provides overall direction and guidance to software engineering managers, database specialists, software developers, and contract labor teams. Responsible for driving software development across multiple teams and agile phases to ensure execution of work plans and for determining department priorities to meet software development, maintenance, and innovation objectives.
Responsibilities and Accountabilities
- Own the strategic vision and roadmap for all Product(s) within area of responsibility. Ensure alignment between business strategies, enterprise transformation initiatives, technology standards and practices.
- Ensure quality and timely delivery of new and/or enhanced systems/technologies.
- Oversee solution architecture, software engineering, test automation, performance engineering, DevSecOps and production support service levels.
- Collaborate with customers, other IT managers, vendors, and management to identify and maximize opportunities to use technology to improve customer experience and business processes.
- Prepare business cases, including financial analyses of potential new technologies/systems/applications; evaluate based on strategic needs and resource availability.
- Contribute to development of software, test automation, performance engineering standards, policies, processes, and procedures to align with enterprise standards.
- Continuously assess technology needs of supported business functions/processes relative to new technological developments and trends; stay abreast of industry and emerging technologies.
- Participate in vendor/strategic partner evaluations and monitor relationships ongoing.
- Prepare/manage department budget: P&L forecasting, operational/capital expenditures, contract negotiations and invoice processing.
- Lead and manage team to accomplish objectives through recruitment, training and development, performance management and rewards & recognition.
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong stakeholder management experience.
- Broad knowledge of software development techniques, processes, methods and best practices.
- Deep working knowledge of specialty commercial insurance ( casualty, workers comp, construction, energy, large account business ).
- Knowledge of application test automation products, processes, and best practices.
- Thorough knowledge of all assigned systems, applications, technologies.
- Proven experience with Agile development and its application to technology needs to enable business outcomes.
- Experience modernizing technologies to enable underwriting efficiency.
- Strong strategic decision-making and long-term planning abilities to manage resources and develop efficient solutions to complex business problems.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively lead and motivate teams; ability to collaborate with senior management.
- Development experience with Java (backend) and Angular (frontend); experience in scalable, high-availability AWS and Azure hosting environments.
- Strong knowledge of MS SQL.
Education & Experience
- 10 to 15 years related experience in software development & architecture
- 8+ years of management experience and 5+ years of managing people managers
- 3+ years in a leadership role (strategic vision, vendor management and budget)
- 3+ years of experience in preparing and managing department budget
- At least 5 years of experience in solution architecture leveraging modern architecture principles
Compensation & Benefits
Salary: $155,000 - $280,000/year. Position is incentive eligible.
- Total compensation (base salary, short & long-term incentives) will consider factors including geographic location, scope & responsibilities, qualifications, talent availability & specialization, and business needs. The pay range may be modified in the future.
