Job description

Who We Are

Murmuration is a nonprofit organization that amplifies the power of civic engagement by providing data, digital tools, and research-driven insights to community-focused organizations so that together we can create an America where everyone can lead healthy, free, and dignified lives.

Who We Are

Murmuration is a nonprofit organization that amplifies the power of civic engagement by providing data, digital tools, and research-driven insights to community-focused organizations so that together we can create an America where everyone can lead healthy, free, and dignified lives.

Every day, people are trying to shape our future for the better. Fighting for water that's safe to drink. Schools that serve students equitably. Gun laws that make sense. And rallying people who care like we do. And yet too often the skillful organizers working to mobilize communities lack access to technology that could supercharge their efforts. Knocking on every door instead of knowing which will open most easily. And going up against outside interests that have half the heart, but twice the tools.

In communities across America, Murmuration's partners are leveraging our data, tools, and insights to help thousands of organizers orchestrate millions of individual people to do big things together. Demand big things together. To create the world they want. Together.

About The Position

As the VP of Product Management leading the Product Management, Product Design, User Education, and User Research Teams, you'll work with a talented team to develop the tools that help our Partners drive impact in their communities.

As part of the Murmuration Leadership Team, you will also collaborate closely with Partner-facing teams and Partners to understand their needs and the broader ecosystem to inform our overall product strategy and priorities. You'll lead the vision and strategy for Murmuration's products and be responsible for delivering successful products that are easy to adopt and use, enabling our Partners to be effective in driving impact in their communities.

The VP of Product Management is also responsible for the management and development of each member of the team, the full range of product development systems and processes, and for driving clarity of purpose and progress across the organization and broader ecosystem.

Job Level: E1

What You'll Do

  • Develop and refine product vision and strategy for Murmuration's products in alignment with Murmuration's mission, vision, and organizational objectives, and through a deep understanding of our target market, customers, and the civic tech ecosystem of data and tools;
  • Lead our integration strategy: where we fit in the context of the ecosystem and how the platform interacts with adjacent third-party products, services, and data;
  • Define, refine, and measure success against key product metrics that ladder up to Murmuration's impact metrics;
  • Own high-level product decisions, including defining major releases, making strategic, feature area-level prioritization decisions, and defining and refining product lines and points of integration;
  • Develop annual and quarterly roadmaps and timelines with the team, incorporating Partner and stakeholder feedback, then sharing roadmap decisions with the broader organization and Partners;
  • Partner closely with our Product Marketing Team on our go-to-market strategy;
  • Oversee the organization's definition and refinement of various user research, design, product management, product development, analytics, and user education processes, striking a balance between autonomy and standardization to best set teams up for success;
  • Develop team members as leaders and help them grow in their careers through mentorship, coaching, and creating opportunities for growth and development;
  • Demonstrate strong judgment across management and workforce planning decisions, including hiring processes and decisions, promotion/salary decisions, and retention;
  • Set an example and uphold expectations such that the team embodies Murmuration's guiding principles;
  • Develop strong relationships across the organization, contributing to a collaborative, transparent cross-team culture, quick cycle times, and low barriers to communication'
  • Drive clarity internally, ensuring that everyone across the organization understands what we're building, how we're making prioritization decisions, and why;
  • Communicate clearly in writing, in presentation, and in meetings with audiences ranging from executive leadership to All Staff;
  • Drive clarity externally, framing product strategy and roadmaps through the lens of mission, vision, and organizational objectives (including both public speaking, as well as acting as a key stakeholder in product marketing and communications decisions);
  • Lead high-stake external demos and pitches and represent the platform at external events; and
  • Develop strong relationships in the civic tech ecosystem, helping to identify and translate gaps in the market, opportunities, and risks into product strategy

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in a Product leadership role;
  • 5+ years of experience as a manager, including experience coaching, making hiring decisions, and managing reports with a range of skillsets and seniority;
  • Experience developing and implementing product strategy;
  • Experience developing and nurturing team culture, balancing high expectations with high psychological safety;
  • Technical competence sufficient to support positive-sum engagement on tech stack and architectural decisions, as they relate to long-term product opportunities and constraints;
  • Experience implementing a range of approaches to managing technical product development work, including different flavors of software development;
  • A bias for action and an entrepreneurial, proactive mindset: the ability to thrive working in fast-paced environments (e.g., startup or similar);
  • Strong judgment and analytical skills, including the ability to understand business requirements, integrate qualitative and quantitative metrics, and reconcile short-term needs with long-term strategic goals; and
  • Experience working with campaigns, advocacy organizations/nonprofits, and/or existing products in the political/civic tech ecosystem

Nice to Haves

  • Experience leading cross-functional teams developing technical/backend/data architecture, like APIs or ETL pipelines;
  • Experience with B2B SaaS product management and collaborating with go-to-market teams;
  • Experience working with customer success and support teams;
  • Hands-on experience with user-centered design (wireframing, storyboarding, user flow development);
  • Experience in profile-based systems (like CRMs), especially related to audience segmentation and analysis; and/or
