Overview:

One of our clients in the health / wellness / fitness space is seeking a Vice President of Digital Marketing for a direct-hire position. The VP will have full autonomy to make decisions for the Marketing department, but will be expected to lead with a strategic and collaborative approach.

While the role is a combo of strategy, leadership, and mentoring, the ideal candidate should be a Subject Matter Expert in digital marketing and able to “get their hands dirty” regarding campaigns or initiatives when needed to show guidance to the team members.

The marketing team, consisting of 10 members mostly at a mid-level, is looking for a leader who can guide them to success without introducing heavy-handed changes. The team has already rolled out impressive initiatives without a VP, so a balanced, supportive approach is essential.

Location: Hybrid in San Diego County, 4 days in office, 1 day remote (there is no relocation assistance for this role if you are out of market)

Salary: $170,000 - $210,000 depending on experience

VP of Digital Marketing Duties:

  • Leverage research and data analytics to define, execute, and evaluate both strategic and tactical marketing and public relations plans.
  • Identify growth opportunities within franchisees and customer segments to drive acquisition, conversion, and retention efforts.
  • Lead corporate communications efforts, ensuring consistency in messaging and maintaining brand integrity both internally and externally.
  • Oversee public relations initiatives to elevate the brand’s reputation and build positive media relationships.
  • Manage short-term and long-term scheduling, budgets, and resources, ensuring alignment with the company’s business goals.
  • Develop and manage the annual marketing budget, optimizing resource allocation to achieve maximum ROI.
  • Establish and nurture strategic alliances and third-party relationships to support marketing initiatives.
  • Lead the team in making decisions about vendor contracts and outside contractors, ensuring they align with corporate policies.
  • Build and mentor a high-performing marketing team of 10 members, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and accountability.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the marketing team, helping them succeed and grow without micromanaging.
  • Act as a strategic leader while being hands-on when necessary, sharing knowledge and teaching the team to elevate their skills, particularly in digital marketing.
  • Provide regular updates and strategic reviews to the Executive Team, keeping them informed on the progress of key initiatives.
  • Stay current on industry trends, consumer behavior, and the competitive landscape to inform marketing strategies and drive innovation.
  • Shepherd the team through exciting initiatives such as the rollout of a new CRM, a website overhaul, and a full rebranding effort.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to ensure marketing strategies align with and support overall business objectives.
  • Manage marketing channels, including social media, website, email, SMS, in-app/app push notifications, brick and mortar location ads, and direct mail.

VP of Digital Marketing Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, advertising, business, or a related field; MBA preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in brand and digital marketing, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role where you have directly managed a team of 6 or more people.
  • Must have mostly brand-side experience, not agency side, and it must be from national footprint, not just regional or local.
  • Strong expertise in digital marketing, including but not limited to SEO, SEM, Google Analytics, and social media marketing.
  • Experience with HubSpot (and transitioning to a new platform), advanced WordPress websites, and CRM tools.
  • Proven leadership ability with strong financial acumen, including experience managing substantial marketing budgets.
  • Ability to inspire and mentor a marketing team, providing guidance and knowledge transfer to elevate team skills.
  • Experience with a variety of marketing channels, including social, web, email, SMS, in-app notifications, and in-studio promotions.
  • Ability to manage and mentor a team without being heavy-handed—an emphasis on shepherding the team to success rather than “fixing” things.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to balance multiple projects and deadlines.
  • A passion for staying up-to-date with industry trends, consumer behavior, and competitive market dynamics.
