Position: VP of Data and AI

Job Type: Exempt - Full-time

Schedule: Monday to Friday 9am-6pm EST

This role is remote (Occasional quarterly travel may be necessary)

Reports to: Chief Technology Officer

Summary

The VP of Data and AI will lead Lumata’s data-driven strategy and AI innovation, overseeing all aspects of data architecture, analytics, data science, governance and external data partnerships. Reporting to the CTO, this role will be responsible for shaping and executing the organization’s data roadmap, overseeing the data architecture in alignment with our strategic objectives—ranging from delivering insights to inform clinical and operational decisions, advanced R&D, developing AI/ML capabilities and commercial partnerships.

The ideal candidate blends deep data, technical acumen with cross-functional leadership, thrives in ambiguity, and brings experience turning data assets into business value — especially in healthcare or life sciences environments.

Essential Functions

Data Strategy and Governance

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive data strategy aligned with organizational goals.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, GDPR, and other relevant regulations,
  • Oversee data quality management, master data management, and data integrity initiatives.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership to drive best practices for data usage across all business units.

Data Infrastructure and Engineering

  • Lead the define and execute data architecture, design, development, and maintenance of scalable data pipelines, warehousing, and integrations (e.g., EMR, third-party data sources).
  • Partner with the CTO and IT/Tech teams to build secure, efficient data environments that support real-time analytics and historical reporting.
  • Champion best practices in data architecture, ensuring systems can scale for future growth and evolving business needs.

Analytics and Reporting

  • Direct the creation and maintenance of dashboards, scorecards, and KPI metrics (e.g., BEPD, AEPPY, enrollment, churn) for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with Clinical Operations, Sales, CS, Marketing, and Finance to deliver actionable insights that drive informed decision-making.
  • Oversee the development of periodic reports for leadership teams (SLT, ELT, BoD) and performance-based contract requirements.

AI/ML Innovation and Operationalization

  • Collaborate with product and clinical ops to embed AI into care workflows, automation, and retention systems.
  • Own the strategy and roadmap for Lumata’s models, call summarization tools, real-time audit assist workflows to improve patient care, quality and clinical OPs team’s efficiency.
  • Lead MLOps practices for model lifecycle management (AWS SageMaker, Comprehend, custom APIs).

Data Science and R&D

  • Drive advanced analytics and predictive modeling efforts (machine learning, AI) to enhance product development and refine clinical/operational processes.
  • Guide internal research initiatives to continuously improve algorithms, methodologies, and patient outcomes.
  • Oversee the publication of abstracts, research papers, and thought leadership content to strengthen Lumata’s reputation in clinical data innovation.

Partnerships & Commercialization

  • Manage external data-sharing agreements (e.g., pharma partnerships, research funding organizations) and lead commercial data offerings (e.g., mVT insights, IITs).
  • Collaborate with Finance and Enterprise Clients on performance-based agreements, ensuring transparent data reporting and pricing adjustments based on KPIs.
  • Identify new revenue opportunities by leveraging data assets for commercial products and strategic partnerships.

Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or a related field (Required). Master’s or PhD preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive leadership in data analytics, data science, or related fields, with at least 5 years in a senior management or executive role. (required)
  • Leadership & Management: History of building, mentoring, and managing high-performing data teams, with the ability to influence cross-functional leaders and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated track record overseeing data strategy, governance, engineering, and analytics in a complex, regulated environment (e.g., healthcare, life sciences, finance).
  • Proven experience with HIPAA, GDPR, and other regulatory frameworks. (preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and commercializing AI products or data services.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong background in database architectures, ETL/ELT pipelines, data warehousing, AI/ML, MLOPs and BI/reporting tools.

  • Innovation: Comfortable with emerging technologies in AI/ML, cloud services, and data analytics to maintain a competitive edge.

Physical requirements

  • Must have a home office that is secure and free of distractions (HIPAA-compliant workspace)
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to hear, speak, call and virtually meet
  • Must be able to communicate both verbally and in writing

Work Environment

In order to perform the essential functions of this job, you must have a dedicated remote workspace, and a wireless connection with a minimum of 50 Mbps of download speed and 10 Mbps of upload speed of dedicated internet bandwidth for each person working from home; the workspace is private and has low to no noise level as you will be on phone calls with patients. It is very important that your workspace is HIPAA compliant; your company issued laptop/pc must maintain visibility that only you can access as you'll be handling patient data. You are also expected to have your camera on during virtual meetings, therefore, you must be in a designated workspace/room for privacy.
