Job summary

Subway is seeking a Vice President of Engineering to lead the engineering org behind our franchisee-facing in-restaurant experience. You will own tech strategy, the budget, and the org design for a team of about 50 engineers, partnering with CTO and product to turn roadmaps into tangible results for guests.

This is a full-scope leadership role focused on architecture, delivery, cost management, and building a high-performing culture with a strong emphasis on reliability and scale.

Qualifications

• 10+ years in engineering leadership, including 5+ years managing managers in an organization of 40+ engineers.
• Direct ownership of an engineering budget and proven P&L experience.
• Experience designing and evolving org structure at scale.
• Direct experience delivering consumer-facing mobile applications; React Native strongly preferred.
• Hands-on AWS architecture including serverless and containerized services (Lambda, Fargate, DynamoDB).
• Experience leading engineering for multi-unit retail or restaurant scale.
• Strong partnership skills with product, marketing, and business stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Set technical strategy and architecture direction across the franchisee engineering teams and own what they deliver.
• Own the roadmap-to-delivery pipeline including planning, prioritization, release management, and balancing feature work with reliability and debt.
• Make build-vs-buy decisions across AWS stack considering scalability, resilience, and cost.
• Manage the engineering budget end-to-end and optimize tooling and cloud spend.
• Shape the org structure and span of control as teams scale, including leadership of managers and directors.
• Lead incident management, code quality practices, and system reliability with clear SLAs/SLOs.
• Partner with CTO and product leadership to translate business goals into engineering OKRs and report in business terms.
