Job description

Editor-in-Chief, BOOM! Studios, is a pivotal role in our team, the company, and the industry.

The Editor-in-Chief will report to and work with the Deputy Publisher to set editorial priorities for the list. Priorities include identifying and pursuing authors and books that will help define the future of the imprint to targeting opportunities in established and emerging categories that play to and extend the Imprint’s strengths. In setting such priorities, the position will help shape a growing, profitable program that speaks to and represents the diversity of our potential audiences and society.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with the Deputy Publisher to set the editorial vision and strategy
  • Act as primary owner of greenlight process: steer editorial staff through the process from concept to acquisition meeting and ensure their projects cover stated company goals
  • Acquire and edit anchor titles for the lists
  • Oversee an editorial department with varying levels of experience
  • Develop the team’s personal and collective goals
  • Mentor editorial staff from the most inexperienced to senior levels
  • Foster a highly collaborative workplace centered around a culture of excellence
  • Prioritize the values and practices of diversity and inclusion
  • Prioritize the needs of the team to ensure smooth running of the department
  • Collaborate with the Publisher & Deputy Publisher to optimize processes across multiple departments and teams, including Sales, Managing Editorial, Design, Production, Publicity, and Marketing
  • Lead as a key ambassador for the group, articulating its mission and building relationships with our many colleagues and external partners

A typical day may require you to traverse between P&Ls and budget for titles, timely acquisition reads, a cover design meeting, account updates, consumer insights reports, and check-ins with the Publisher and Deputy Publisher, among other meetings and tasks. Hence, a cross-disciplinary background and mindset is crucial to success.

  • Deep editorial background in books or other content-rich media spaces
  • 12-15 years’ experience with the comic book industry
  • Previous experience managing a team of Editors or Creators is a plus, though other forms of leadership—such as through impactful creative or journalistic work or positions held in adjacent cultural organizations—will also be closely considered
  • Analytical mindset and the ability to talk through examples of when you’ve demonstrated this
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks regularly, balancing deadlines with a focus on standard of quality and critical relationships
  • Curiosity for new voices, ideas, and breaking trends with a focus on backlist conversion
  • Entrepreneurial spirit to channel innovation into book form
  • Flexible Mindset
  • Experience implementing strategies focused on diversity and inclusion across a range of areas, from hiring to training to acquisition and more

The BOOM! Studio division of Random House Worlds is based in New York City. This position is open to remote candidates.

The salary range for this position is $150,000 – 165,000. All positions are currently eligible for an annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
