Job summary

NFP, an Aon company, is seeking an AVP/VP of Benefits Compliance to lead development of high‑quality compliance content and client guidance. You will translate complex rules into clear insights for internal consultants and external clients, create whitepapers, and support webinars and training initiatives.

The role involves mentoring junior staff, owning compliance initiatives, and collaborating with regional sales and account teams to advance the firm's compliance narrative.

Qualifications

  • Deep knowledge of ERISA, HIPAA, COBRA, ACA, MHPAEA, FMLA, CAA 2021, Transparency in Coverage rules, Section 125 plans, tax-advantaged arrangements (FSAs, HRAs, HSAs), state PFML laws, and state employee health and welfare benefit laws.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills for a non-legal audience.
  • Ability to translate complex legal concepts into practical business guidance.
  • Strong presentation skills for webinars and educational sessions.
  • Experience as thought leader and trusted advisor in fast-paced client-facing roles.
  • Excellent research and analytical capabilities, with attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to benefits questions on health and welfare plan compliance (ERISA, HIPAA, COBRA, ACA, MHPAEA, FMLA, etc.).
  • Develop and maintain internal and external benefits compliance tools and resources.
  • Draft compliance whitepapers and communications in a concise, clear manner.
  • Conduct employee benefits seminars and webinars.
  • Monitor legislative/regulatory developments across states and industries.
  • Perform client compliance checklist reviews with account teams.
  • Own or co-own compliance initiatives with sales and leadership teams.
  • Mentor or manage junior team members as needed.
  • Contribute to the Benefits Compliance Department's mission.
  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the Deputy Chief Compliance Officer, the AVP or VP of Benefits Compliance, sometimes also referred to in the industry as "Benefits Compliance Counsel", "ERISA Counsel", "Employee Benefits Attorney", or "Benefits Compliance Specialist", will join a team of other compliance attorneys and specialists dedicated to providing exemplary benefits compliance services with a primary focus on developing and delivering high-quality compliance content, thought leadership, and technical guidance.

This role is central to translating complex group employee health & welfare benefit regulations into clear, actionable insights for internal consultants and external clients. The VP will develop whitepapers, compliance bulletins, and educational materials, while also supporting client advisory work, internal training initiatives, and delivering client webinars. This individual will operate as both a subject matter expert and a strategic partner to the business, helping to shape the firm's compliance narrative and market-facing expertise.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Respond to benefits questions concerning health and welfare plan compliance in areas such as ERISA, HIPAA, COBRA, ACA, MHPAEA, FMLA, CAA 2021, Transparency in Coverage rules, Section 125 plans, tax-advantaged arrangements (e.g., FSAs, HRAs, and HSAs), state PFML laws, and state employee health and welfare benefit laws.
  • Develop and maintain internal and external employee benefits compliance tools and resources
  • Draft benefits compliance whitepapers and other important communications in a concise, easy-to-understand manner
  • Conduct employee benefit compliance seminars and webinars
  • Stay abreast of the changing legislative and regulatory landscape, including ownership of a set of states for tracking legislative and regulatory developments
  • Perform client compliance checklist reviews in conjunction with account management teams
  • Own or co-own compliance initiatives in conjunction with regional sales and account management leaders, including compliance committee discussions and webinar training
  • Mentor or manage junior team members of the Benefits Compliance team, as needed
  • Contribute to the overall mission of the Benefits Compliance Department
  • Other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND/OR ABILITIES:
  • Deep knowledge of ERISA, HIPAA, COBRA, ACA, MHPAEA, FMLA, CAA 2021, Transparency in Coverage rules, Section 125 plans, tax-advantaged arrangements (e.g., FSAs, HRAs, and HSAs), state PFML laws, and state employee health and welfare benefit laws
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise, and engaging compliance content for a non-legal audience
  • Ability to synthesize complex legal concepts into practical business guidance
  • Strong presentation skills, with experience leading webinars and educational sessions
  • Proven ability to function as a thought leader and trusted advisor in a fast-paced, client-facing environment
  • Strong research and analytical capabilities, with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally with consulting, sales, and leadership teams
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities and deadlines
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

None required, but potential for managing or mentoring junior team members.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Law degree preferred
  • Prior experience with federal or state governmental regulatory body a plus
  • CEBS designation (or equivalent industry experience) preferred
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in employee benefits compliance

The base salary range for this position is $120,000.00 - $173,000.00. The base salary offered will be determined by factors including, but not limited to, experience, credentials, education, certifications, skill level required for the position, the scope of the position, and geographic location. Actual base salary offered will be determined on a case by case basis. In addition to the base salary, this position may be eligible for performance-based incentives.
