Job description

Join to apply for the Volunteer: Guardian ad Litem Volunteer Advocate - Willimantic Region role at Children in Placement.

About Children in Placement: A 501(c)3 non-profit helping Connecticut's children since 1979. We aim to be a leader in supporting children and youth to access resources and systemic policy changes for their development and success.

Guardian ad Litem (GAL) Volunteer Opportunity

Many abused, neglected, and abandoned children in Connecticut become part of judicial proceedings, often without their voices heard. GAL volunteers serve as friends of the court, advocating for children in protective custody to help reduce their wait for permanent placement.

Responsibilities include investigating cases by interviewing children, family, social workers, and other professionals, then making recommendations to the court. Volunteers undergo extensive training (40 hours plus 12 hours annually), are supervised, and support is provided throughout.

Volunteers are assigned one case at a time, remaining until the child's case is closed and a final placement is secured. They provide essential advocacy and emotional support, often being the only consistent adult presence in a child's life.

Time Commitment

Approximately 2-5 hours per month, with most cases lasting 3-6 months, depending on case complexity.
