Job description

Join to apply for the Volunteer: Guardian ad Litem Volunteer Advocate - Waterford/New London Region role at Children in Placement.

Children in Placement is a 501(c)3 non-profit helping Connecticut's children since 1979. We aim to raise awareness, build partnerships, and support systemic policy changes to help children and youth access necessary resources for development and success.

Guardian ad Litem (GAL) Volunteer Opportunity

Many abused, neglected, and abandoned children in Connecticut become involved in court proceedings, often without their voices being heard. GAL volunteers serve as friends of the court, advocating for children in protective custody to help find permanent placements efficiently.

Responsibilities include investigating cases by interviewing children, families, and professionals, and making recommendations to the court based on thorough understanding. Volunteers undergo 40 hours of training, with a 12-hour annual follow-up, and stay with their assigned case until it concludes with a permanent placement.

GAL advocates provide vital support and advocacy, ensuring children's best interests are prioritized while offering stability and trust. Our goal is to help children find safe, stable, and permanent homes where they can thrive.

Time Commitment

Volunteers typically spend 2-5 hours per month on a case, with most cases lasting 3-6 months, depending on case complexity.
