Every day, the American Red Cross helps people in emergencies, from individual home fires to large-scale disasters. Our work relies on volunteers like you. Must live in Westchester or Rockland County, NY, to be eligible.

Position Purpose

Disaster Action Teams (DAT) respond to local emergencies, providing emotional support, financial aid, and recovery information. The Disaster Duty Officer ensures timely activation and monitoring of DAT responses, supporting regional or chapter-level operations. All training will be provided.

Leadership Responsibilities
  1. Triages incoming requests to determine if Red Cross response is needed; may decide on DAT activation.
  2. Uses event triggers to escalate responses when necessary.
  3. Supports on-scene DAT leadership and provides technical guidance.
  4. Communicates with leadership and stakeholders.
  5. May prepare Initial Incident Reports (IIR) depending on regional processes.
  6. Ensures response compliance with DAT Standards and Procedures.
  7. Maintains close contact with DAT Regional Program Lead.
  8. Documents disaster notifications and assigns calls in RC Respond.
Operational Responsibilities
  1. Manages all DAT calls and activities.
  2. Identifies and dispatches available DAT responders.
  3. Activates additional services like Disaster Health, Mental Health, Spiritual Care, and Public Affairs as needed.
  4. Maintains communication with responders and updates RC Respond.
  5. May monitor multiple responses simultaneously.
  6. Attends scheduled meetings as required.
Hours
  • Must commit to at least one 12-hour on-call shift per week.
  • Preferred shift times: 7 PM - 7 AM (e.g., Saturday overnight, Tuesday-Thursday overnights).
