Position Title Volunteer Coordinator Days - Full Time Liberty Hospital

Position Summary / Career Interest: The Volunteer Coordinator interviews, places, trains and supervises volunteers for multiple KU affiliated sites. They provide on-going supervision and training for new and existing volunteers, in accordance with Health System policies, current Joint Commission standard and best practices. The position plans and implements volunteer orientation for all new volunteers, and plans and implements volunteer programs as dictated by the needs of the health system. The incumbent will also plan, organize and implement recognition events for volunteers. The Volunteer Coordinator ensures daily operational efficiency for volunteer department, recruiting, onboarding, placing, training, and recognizing/rewarding existing volunteers.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

Provides effective leadership to volunteer department; able to strategically identify, internalize and communicate the critical success factors necessary for the volunteer department as a whole and specifically to the strategic plan of the University of Kansas Health System. Oversees the daily operations of the volunteer department, including the supervision of volunteers and coordination with staff members in areas they serve. Is a super-user of volunteer database, to keep track of volunteers’ hours contributed and status (active, inactive, on a leave of absence, etc.), tracks trends, runs reports, and utilizes pertinent information as needed. Utilizes volunteers in creative ways to meet emotional and psychosocial needs of patients and families. Assesses, recruits and orients volunteers needed to accomplish goals of various hospital departments. Manages organizational responsibilities in a way that supports the achievement of unit/team goals. Works effectively with others in the management team to accomplish organizational goals and to identify and resolve problems. Skillfully administers, directs and allocates all organizational resources. Demonstrates personal effectiveness in leading the volunteer department towards its goals. Models appropriate values and maintains and promotes social, ethical and organizational cultural norms. Creates and communicates the “big picture” understanding of the hospital and works to ensure the department supports the organization’s desired mission and values. Uses appropriate interpersonal styles and methods to develop a volunteer spirit of cooperation within the department and with other departments throughout the organization. Manages the daily operations of the Volunteer Department to ensure effective selection, orientation, and training of volunteers. Provides on-going training to include compliance with JCAHO regulations, HIPAA regulations, safety training, infection control, confidentiality, legal issues, and hospital policies and practices. Maintains all volunteer files in compliance with Joint Commission regulations. Assists in planning and implementing special events to reward and recognize adult and high school volunteers, including annual holiday activities and annual spring recognition event. Develops new programs that meet the strategic goals of the health system, including increasing patient satisfaction. Provides meaningful volunteer opportunities while at the same time helping various departments meet their goals to better serve patients and families. Seeks continuing education as appropriate to the field of volunteer management. Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department. Required Education and Experience
  • High School Graduate or GED.
  • 5 or more years of experience in healthcare or volunteer services.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Bachelors Degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration or a related field of study from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Licensure and Certification
  • Certified Administrator of Volunteer Services (CAVS) - Patient Experience Institute (PXi)
Knowledge Requirements
  • Basic Computer Skills.
  • Excellent Grammar and writing skills preferred.
