Job Description:

The opportunity:

The Vocational Rehabilitation Consultant is responsible for supporting the disability claims organization providing vocational expertise to evaluate and consult claims to support the Sun Life promise to our clients.

How you will contribute:

  • Assess information to determine if claimants qualify for return to work (RTW) or rehabilitation programs.

  • Provide personalized guidance in vocational, motivational, and personal areas, including RTW policy and incentives.

  • Negotiate modified or alternative job duties for claimants who cannot return to their previous roles.

  • Select, authorize and monitor independent rehabilitation services, including payment & quality assurance.

  • Act as a bridge between claimants, internal teams, and external agencies to coordinate RTW efforts and resources.

  • Conduct skills analysis and labor market research to identify employment opportunities aligned with claimant abilities

  • Identify and implement accommodations/modifications, including assistive devices, to facilitate the RTW process.

  • Maintain claim file through up-to-date documentation of telephone calls and vocational rehabilitation activity as required by established claim procedures

  • Participate in educational seminars, conferences, client presentations and association meetings to increase knowledge of the vocational rehabilitation field

  • Participate in research and education activities for the vocational consulting team and assist with the training of the in-house vocational staff and claim staff

  • Participate in formal and informal claim discussions to assist with claim management direction and to proactively identify potential for vocational rehabilitation and/or risk assessment support

  • Coordinate with the claims staff to provide information or reporting on occupational analyses, transferable skills assessment, and potential for impact of rehabilitation activity as part of claim management next steps

What you will bring with you:

  • Master's degree in vocational rehabilitation counseling (or related field) plusCRCorCDMScertification.

  • 24 years of experience in the vocational rehab field is essential.

  • Ability to work well independently and in a team environment

  • Ability to initiate and prioritize regular work duties and projects

  • Ability to work professionally and effectively with co-workers, clients, claimants, vendors and others with whom Sun Life does business

  • Strong abilities in research, analysis, problem-solving, and decision-making.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a professional demeanor.

  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and email systems.

  • Detail-oriented, capable of multi-tasking, prioritizing, and managing time effectively.

Salary:$71,100 - $106,700

Your actual base salary will be determined based on your unique skills, qualifications, experience, education, and geographic location. In addition to your base salary, this position is eligible for a discretionary annual incentive award based on your individual performance as well as the overall performance of the business.
