Job summary

The San Francisco Chronicle Visuals Internship offers a summer 2027 program for aspiring photojournalists. Based in San Francisco, interns cover news, features and sports, producing stills, video, captions and occasional reporting under deadline pressure.

The internship runs 12 weeks at 40 hours per week, starting in early June. Interns are paid 20.50 USD per hour and will be mentored by a photographer and a photo editor to develop reporting, editing and storytelling skills.

Qualifications

• Junior, senior, or recent graduate with experience at a college news publication or professional news organization.
• Strong online portfolio featuring still photography and video.
• Keen attention to detail and strong news & ethical judgment and the ability to work under deadlines.
• Current driver's license and car, or willingness to use rideshares/public transport.
• Interest in local and community storytelling.

San Francisco Chronicle Visuals Internship

The San Francisco Chronicle is looking for a talented, energetic photojournalist to join our Visuals team for its summer 2027 internship program. The San Francisco Chronicle is the largest newspaper in Northern California and the second largest on the West Coast and our award-winning journalists provide insight into the people and events shaping the Bay Area.

The Visuals intern will cover a variety of news, features, sports assignments and visual essays. The intern is responsible for making photographs, capturing video, initial photo editing, writing captions and some reporting. This position is based in San Francisco.

Responsibilities:

• Make informative and visually compelling images on deadline for daily stories.
• Transmit photos and videos remotely.
• Contribute accurate, concise, typo-free captions and additional reporting.
• Collaborate closely with editors and reporters in the field.

Requirements:

• Juniors, seniors, or recent grads with prior experience at a college news publication or professional news organization.

Internship Details:

• 40 hours a week for 12 weeks, from early June and to early August. Interns will be paid $20.50 an hour.
• Interns will work a five-day week, with possible weekend coverage.
• Interns will be assigned a photographer and photo editor mentor.
