Job summary

TEGNA Inc. in Sacramento seeks a talented Visual Journalist & Storyteller for ABC10 Originals. This full-time role focuses on long-form storytelling across broadcast, digital, and streaming platforms.

The ideal candidate will shoot and edit compelling narratives, collaborate with reporters and editors, and utilize advanced production techniques including drone footage, motion graphics, and color grading.

Qualifications

• Five or more years of professional news, documentary, or long-form storytelling experience preferred.
• Strong ability to shoot and edit compelling, narrative-driven stories with visual impact.
• Advanced proficiency in Premiere Pro and working knowledge of After Effects.
• Understanding of cinematography, visual sequencing, natural sound, and pacing.
• Experience with color grading, lighting, and professional audio recording.
• Familiarity with Sony cameras, S-Log workflows, and modern production techniques.
• Experience using live transmission tools such as TVU or Dejero.
• FAA Part 107 drone certification preferred.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
• Able to work independently and collaboratively; calm under deadline pressure.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a dedicated visual journalist for ABC10 Originals, contributing to investigative, enterprise, and documentary projects.
• Shoot and edit high-quality stories ranging from general assignment to half-hour and hour-long specials.
• Collaborate with reporters, producers, and editors to plan visual storytelling from concept to completion.
• Create content for TV, digital platforms, social media, and ABC10+ streaming.
• Use advanced production techniques including drone, graphics, motion design, and lighting.
• Operate professional video equipment including mirrorless and Sony FS-series cameras.
• Perform post-production: color correction, color grading, audio mixing, and VFX.
• Edit with Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects for multi-platform delivery.
• Support breaking news and special events as needed.
• Travel throughout Northern California for assignments; operate station vehicles.

ABC10, the TEGNA-owned ABC affiliate in Sacramento, California, is seeking a talented and innovative Visual Journalist & Storyteller to join our award-winning ABC10 Originals team.

This is a unique opportunity for a creative photojournalist and editor who is passionate about long-form storytelling, investigative journalism, documentaries, and streaming content. We are looking for someone who can produce compelling visual narratives that stand out across broadcast, digital, and streaming platforms.

The ideal candidate is a strong shooter, editor, and collaborator who thrives on enterprise storytelling and can help bring ambitious projects to life through cinematic visuals, thoughtful production, and creative editing.

This is a full-time, non-exempt position reporting to the Director of Special Projects.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a dedicated visual journalist for ABC10 Originals, contributing to investigative, enterprise, and documentary-style projects.
• Shoot and edit high-quality stories ranging from general assignment and enterprise pieces to half-hour and hour-long specials.
• Collaborate closely with reporters, producers, and editors to develop visual storytelling strategies from concept through completion.
• Create compelling content for television, digital platforms, social media, and ABC10+ streaming.
• Utilize advanced production techniques including drone photography, graphics, motion design, natural sound storytelling, and creative lighting.
• Operate professional video equipment, including mirrorless and Sony FS-series cameras.
• Perform advanced post-production work, including color correction, color grading, audio mixing, and visual effects.
• Edit using Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects, producing content optimized for multiple platforms and audiences.
• Support breaking news and special event coverage when needed.
• Operate station vehicles and travel throughout Northern California for assignments.
• Stay current with emerging storytelling tools, technologies, and production techniques.

Requirements

• Five or more years of professional news, documentary, or long-form storytelling experience preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to shoot and edit compelling, narrative-driven stories with strong visual composition and emotional impact.
• Advanced proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro and working knowledge of Adobe After Effects.
• Strong understanding of cinematography, visual sequencing, natural sound, and pacing.
• Experience with color grading, advanced lighting techniques, and professional audio recording.
• Familiarity with Sony camera systems, S-Log workflows, and modern digital production techniques.
• Experience using live transmission tools such as TVU, Dejero, or similar systems.
• FAA Part 107 drone certification preferred.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a team environment.
• Calm and adaptable under deadline pressure and during breaking news situations.
• Excellent communication skills and a passion for innovation, creativity, and impactful journalism.

Pay Range

$25.40 - $33.66 USD

TEGNA offers comprehensive benefits designed to safeguard the physical, mental and financial health of our employees and their families.
