Job summary

Smithsonian Institution seeks a Visual Information Specialist to design and produce museum publications, including exhibition catalogues, donor materials, annual reports and brochures. The role collaborates with curators, editors, photographers and vendors to translate scholarly content into visually compelling print pieces in line with brand standards.

The position requires strong typography, print production knowledge and the ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining high standards

Qualifications

• One year of specialized experience equivalent to IS/GS-05.
• Experience designing print publications, brochures, reports, or catalogues.
• Proficiency with InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat and related software.
• Ability to collaborate with editors, curators, photographers and vendors.

Responsibilities

• Assist in design and production of exhibition catalogues, scholarly books and donor materials.
• Design layouts, typography, maps, timelines, charts, infographics and interpretive graphics.
• Develop layouts balancing content, readability and visual excellence.
• Revise publications per editorial and design feedback.
• Ensure consistency with Smithsonian brand standards.
• Prepare production-ready files and coordinate with printers.
• Create supporting print collateral and exhibition graphics as assigned.
• Manage multiple publication projects from concept to production.
• Collaborate with team to support exhibitions, publications and collateral.
• Maintain production archives and project documentation.
