The International Center of Photography (ICP) is the world’s leading institution dedicated to photography and visual culture. Through our exhibitions, education, public programs, and community outreach, we offer an open forum for dialogue about the power of the image. Since our founding in 1974, we have presented more than 700 exhibitions and offered thousands of classes, providing instruction at every level. Our new integrated center on the Lower East Side reunites our school and museum in one space to become the cultural anchor of Essex Crossing.

Position Summary

This highly visible position is the initial point of contact for the School, Library and ICP Administration. Act as an ICP ambassador to enhance overall audience satisfaction. This includes interacting with current and prospective students, museum visitors, artists, donors, trustees, staff members, the media, vendors, and all others. Welcome visitors, answer questions, and provide information about events, education, programs, and memberships. The position also assists with the ongoing activities of the School and Library of ICP, including class registration, answering general inquiries from the public, ICP staff, faculty, current and prospective students, preparing and disseminating correspondence and assisting with administrative aspects of Continuing Education classes

Essential Functions And Duties

Visitor Experience

  • Greet School visitors – welcome and acknowledge, check IDs, ensure all employees and visitors sign in and out, announce and direct special guests.
  • Greet Special Events visitors – these include public program lectures, tours, private gatherings, etc.
  • Ensure safety of people and property by following appropriate security procedures; report unsafe or inappropriate situations, following up as needed.
  • Answer main ICP phone lines. Provide information; respond to inquiries in pleasant and informed manner. When necessary, take messages and deliver them to appropriate party.
  • Keep current on all ICP activities.
  • Check on security and cleanliness of public areas. Report anything out of place to supervisor or appropriate department.
  • Perform daily pre-opening check. Make sure lights are on, doors are open, and computers and audio presentations are ready for visitors.
  • Assist School Facility staff with performing daily closing procedures and checks. Make sure lights are off, doors are closed space is fully vacated
  • Report equipment failures to relevant department; follow through regarding repairs.
  • Stock informational material throughout the day.
  • Keep up to date on any daily class changes, or adjustments to the building schedule

Library Front Desk

  • Greet visitors – welcome and acknowledge, provide information regarding the usage of the library
  • Answer public inquiries via phone, e-mail and in-person
  • Assist with creating class packets for CE by helping to create class rosters and door signs.
  • Maintain office and supply inventory and keep public spaces organized
  • Follow-up with CE staff if a class does not show-up, account for any class absences
  • Accept library book returns and assist with restocking books into library shelves
  • Assist with any public Lectures

Visitor Front Desk (Ludlow Street)

  • Review daily class rosters and distribute printed CE IDs for students, TAs, and faculty, wristbands, review vaccination info
  • Be familiar with the classroom calendar and provide students, guests, with classroom information as needed
  • Open and close the Ludlow Street door
  • Provide general information about the school regarding programs, classes, and events
  • Provide general information about museum hours, tickets, exhibitions, café, etc.

Miscellaneous (responsibilities May Vary Depending On Shift)

  • Record on the daily log any student, staff and faculty requests for classroom and studio usage/classroom calendar
  • Assist with distributing lab hour cards for Continuing Education courses
  • Shifts will include working Saturday and Sunday
  • Welcome prospective students and provide school tours as needed
  • Assist with Open House preparations and work event
  • Additional responsibilities, as required
  • Complete closing log each night

Minimum Qualifications:

Education Requirement

  • A Bachelor’s degree is preferred (degree in Photography is preferred).

Minimum Experience Requirement

  • General knowledge of photography and two years of office administration experience
  • Superior people skills
  • Strong customer service skills with a commitment to providing superior customer service
  • Excellent organizational skills, including solid follow-through
  • Strong decision-making skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong computer skills
  • Desire to work as an active team member
