Job summary

The Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS) is seeking a Visiting Large River Ecologist to develop and conduct research on bigheaded carp and other invasive species in the Upper Mississippi River. This 100% full-time position is based at the Illinois River Biological Station in Havana, IL, with in-person duties and travel as needed.

Responsibilities include leading field work, supervising staff, analyzing data, and translating findings into reports and management recommendations.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in biology, Aquatic Ecology, Fisheries, or a related field. Alternate degree fields considered depending on experience.
• Minimum of 3 years in standard fish sampling and large river ecology research.
• Experience leading crews on IL Waterway using pulsed-DC electrofishing, fyke and hoop nets; IL River fish ID proficiency.

Responsibilities

• Conduct biological monitoring and research on the Illinois River Waterway using multiple fishing gear; guide contracted harvest.
• Collect fish population data to develop and evaluate research projects and guide management.
• Supervise students and hourly technicians; coordinate field sampling and safety inspections.
