Job summary

The Visiting Large River Ecology position at Illinois Natural History Survey / Prairie Research Institute seeks a scientist to develop and direct research focused on bigheaded carp and other invasive species in the Upper Mississippi River. This is an on-site, in-person role based at the Havana, Illinois facility.

Responsibilities include field sampling, data analysis, supervising staff, and communicating findings to agencies and collaborators.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree or higher in biology, aquatic ecology, fisheries, or related field.
• 3+ years experience with standard fish sampling and large river ecology techniques.
• Experience leading crews on large river sampling and navigating research boats.

Responsibilities

• Conduct biological monitoring and research on large river systems using multiple sampling methods.
• Supervise students and hourly staff, assign tasks, and ensure safety protocols.
• Translate data into actionable management recommendations and publish findings.
